Photobiomodulation: The new frontier of brain science

| June 5, 2019 1:00 AM

Photobiomodulation (PBM) is the use of red or near-infrared light, more specifically low-level laser therapy (LLLT) or cold lasers, to stimulate, heal, regenerate and protect tissue that has either been injured or is degenerating. The main organ of the human body that is the most necessary for life is the brain. Unfortunately, the brain suffers from a multitude of different disorders that can be separated into groupings: traumatic events (stroke and traumatic brain injury), psychiatric disorders (depression, anxiety, PTSD) and degenerative disorders (dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s). There are studies showing the benefit of using LLLT in all of the different disorders. There is even the possibility that PBM could be used for cognitive enhancement in normal healthy people.

In a nutshell, PBM works in the following way: particles of light energy are absorbed by photoreceptors in our cells, triggering positive chemical changes that affect biochemical, physical and neurological benefits to our brain and body. Low-level lasers safely pass concentrated, high energy beams of light through sophisticated diodes onto the part of the body in which we’re treating. Low-level lasers, which are also known as cold lasers, are set at a specific light frequency and power that does not produce heat. And we know that heat can cause potential harm to body tissues.

For decades, LLLT has been shown to have a positive impact on the following:

- Reduction of inflammation.

- Recovery from traumatic brain injury or concussion.

- Energy production within brain and body cells.

- Neuroplasticity and neurogenesis (production of new brain cells).

- Memory, learning and mood.

- Increase blood flow and oxygenation with tissue repair and regeneration.

- Antioxidant production and removal of waste products from cells.

- Chronic pain and lowered dependence on prescription drugs.

- Immune function.

Just as the list of positive impacts with LLLT grows through mounting scientific evidence; so does the list of conditions that can benefit from LLLT.
