FRIDAY: Wear Orange day

| June 5, 2019 1:00 AM

This year for Wear Orange National Gun Violence Awareness Day on June 7, we ask our community to Wear Orange and join us at Family Day in the City Park. Mayor Steve Widmyer has proclaimed Friday, June 7 as National Gun Violence Awareness Day in Coeur d’Alene. Together, we will honor and remember the lives impacted by gun violence. Every day on average, 100 Americans are shot and killed and hundreds more injured.

The significance of Wear Orange comes from the death of a young woman named Hadiya Pendleton who was shot to death in Chicago at the age of 15 in 2013. Her friends wore orange in her honor after her death, which is the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others, and a color that reflects human life.

We hope you will join our Be SMART booth at Family Day in the City Park to learn about responsible gun storage and ways to help protect our children from unintentional shootings and suicide. Free gun locks will be provided, as well as a fun photo booth. To learn more information about the Be SMART program visit: besmartforkids.org
