Two sentenced in gun theft

Two Post Falls men accused of stealing the gun used in the murder of Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore were sentenced last week in U.S. District Court.

Nicholace C. Thomas, 23, and Donald E. Shuck, 33, were sentenced to 24 months in prison followed by three years of supervised probation for possession of a stolen firearm. U.S. District Judge Edward Lodge sentenced Shuck to 200 hours of community service and five years probation for accessory after the fact.

U.S. attorneys said Shuck and Thomas stole the gun April 24, 2015, during an early morning car burglary spree near Post Falls.

Thomas stole the firearm from a vehicle and showed it to Shuck. Thomas later traded the 9 mm Glock for methamphetamine.

Less than two weeks later, on May 5, 2015, Moore was shot and killed with the stolen firearm by Jonathan Renfro.

During the murder investigation, detectives tracked the firearm used by Renfro to Thomas and Shuck, court records show.

Renfro, 31, was convicted in 2017 of murdering Moore. Renfro was sentenced to death. He is being held in the maximum security prison in Boise.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Idaho State Police, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, Coeur d’Alene Police Department, Post Falls Police Department and Idaho Probation and Parole.
