Student charged for weapon at school

| June 1, 2019 1:00 AM

A Lake City High School student was placed under arrest on a charge of possessing a weapon on school grounds, after a firearm was located inside the student’s vehicle in the school parking lot Friday.

The Coeur d’Alene Police Department interviewed the student, who is a juvenile, and determined that the student had planned to go target shooting after school. No threat was intended by the student, according to the police investigation. The student was placed in custody.

School administrators and the school resource officer were alerted to the presence of the firearm by another student who saw the weapon inside the vehicle. As part of Coeur d'Alene's school safety program, school staffs routinely emphasize “See Something, Say Something.” The incident demonstrates the importance of this practice, and this student is to be commended for reporting what he saw to school officials.

The students and staff at Lake City High School are safe and were never in immediate danger. The security response worked as designed, district officials said.
