WHITEHEAD: Must be the best candidate
It’s not often that my husband asks if I read the article on the front page in Sunday’s paper. Neither of us was really thinking about who to vote for Kootenai Country Sheriff but that article sealed the deal. Richard Whitehead must be the best man for the job. Why, you ask? Because small-minded people are making a major event out of the fact that he filed for bankruptcy while living in Texas in 2005.
It conjures up memories from childhood of social mores that prevented people from getting elected. I recall neighbors and even family members telling my parents they wouldn’t vote for Kennedy for president, because he was Catholic. As a child growing up Protestant, I was dumbfounded then that people (including my own grandparents) could be so self-righteous and small.
Then Nelson Rockefeller sought the presidency three times but narrow-minded people couldn’t get past the fact he divorced and remarried (and to a much younger woman, oh my!)
I must have lived under a rock all these years as I never realized bankruptcy was such a hideous crime. So here it is, 2019, and we’re still shooting from the hip that we’re better than others and certainly not considering the significance of what we’re doing. Well, my philosophy is everyone has SOMETHING to hide so before we cast any more stones, let’s take an honest look at ourselves and our intent. Yes, our intent. The front page of the local paper; really?
Well, that does it ... We’re voting for Richard Whitehead. He’s gotta be better than the other candidates who obviously, must be perfect. And it’s the ones who claim they’re without sin, you really gotta watch out for!
