Seeing is believing when it comes to a humane shelter

Take a short trip and be convinced.

On the east side of Coeur d’Alene Airport/Pappy Boyington Field is purgatory for dogs, cats and other animals awaiting adoption. When we say “purgatory,” we mean that it’s safe harbor with plenty of love but in conditions that are far from ideal. It’s not the worst and it’s far from the best. But please don’t take our word for it. Drive up Ramsey Road into Hayden and you’ll end up at the Kootenai Humane Society’s doorstep. See for yourself.

We’re absolutely certain you’ll quickly understand why the two-legged friends of these potentially beloved beasts are working so hard to raise $6.5 million to build them a new home. The new facility will not only take in a lot more canines, felines and other furballs, but provide a better working environment for Kootenai Humane Society employees and their army of volunteers.

With many charities, donors get the satisfaction of seeing something good being done with their hard-earned cash. A special event the evening of Aug. 7, though, offers KHS donors something wonderful in return: an unforgettable experience.

Duane and Lola Hagadone are offering ticket holders food, drink and a garden immersion that you won’t find at any other private residence in the entire Pacific Northwest. Every penny of the $200 cost of a ticket will go directly to the Kootenai Humane Society’s capital campaign because the Hagadones are picking up the bill for all expenses that evening.

After a short voyage to Casco Bay on a Coeur d’Alene Resort cruise boat, visitors will be able to stroll the lush 12 acres boasting a third of a million flowers and plants, sipping cocktails along the way and enjoying delicious edibles.

Construction of the new facility will be a tremendous step forward without unwarranted extravagance. One of the reasons The Press signed on as a friend in this important capital campaign is because the project represents a major upgrade over the existing facility but with functionality as the primary driver. Forget purgatory. The new shelter offers a little bit of heaven without a hell of a bill.
