Lenora Martha Jurvelin, 96

Lenora Martha Hagen Jurvelin passed away July 9, 2019, in hospice care at The Garden at Orchard Ridge. Lenora was born to Arthur C. and Martha P. (Hanson) Hagen, April 3, 1923, in Spokane, Wash., where she grew up.

She graduated from the old Grant Elementary School, attended Lewis and Clark High School, and graduated from Marycliff Girls’ School. She attended the University of Washington in Seattle, and USC in Los Angeles.

She spent 31 years in federal civil service with the U.S. Air Force, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior. She served in Alaska, California and Washington. Her last assignment was as an administrative officer and supervisory budget analyst in Portand, Ore. In the fall of 1979, she moved to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to help care for her father.

She married John K. Prong Jr., of Seattle, at Ladd Air Force Base in Alaska in 1946. They later divorced. On Nov. 15, 1952, Lenora married her sister Judy’s brother-in-law, Waino “Wayne” A. Jurvelin. He preceded her in death in 1999.

Lenora enjoyed involvement in a wide variety of community activities: Civil Air Patrol, Toastmistress Clubs International, the Lady Elks, Eagles Auxilliary, Sigma Phi Gamma International Sorority and Eastern Star. She was also a life-member of the Sons of Norway Lodge in Spokane and was a confirmed Lutheran. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Coeur d’Alene since she moved here. She also served as a chief judge of elections in Coeur d’Alene for many years.

Lenora love to travel and gave freely of her time to arrange and escort international, national and area cruises and trips for Coeur d’Alene senior citizens. Her major claim to fame in Coeur d’Alene was her role as volunteer organizer and coordinator of the Coeur d’Alene Rambling Rovers from its start in 1983 until 2004. A year or so later, she and two of her friends, Voni Ferguson and Dot Herting, formed Lenora’s Leisure Tours to carry on her tradition of guided travel until mobility and visual issues made it too difficult to pay attention to the details she considered important.

“Aunty” is survived by her nephew, Richard A. Jurvelin, his wife, Jill and their daughters, Jilann Lenore Carlson and Janelle Barbara Shaffer; and seven great-grandnieces and nephews. She had no children of her own, but she poured much love into all of her family, including cousins, Elisa and Eleanor, and other traveling friends and companions.

Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, July 14, 2019, at English Funeral Chapel, 1133 N. Fourth St., Coeur d’Alene. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2019, at Trinity Lutheran Church, followed by lunch.
