Hatley bows out in Round of 32

at PNGA Men’s Amateur

TACOMA, Wash. — Reid Hatley’s stay at the PNGA Men’s Amateur came to an end in the Round of 32 on Thursday.

Hatley, from Hayden Lake, lost 1-up to Joe Highsmith of Lakewood, Wash., the winner of last week’s Sahalee Players Championship.

Highsmith went on to win his Round of 16 match later Thursday to advance to today’s quarterfinals.

Little League district titles

on the line this weekend

HAYDEN — Little League baseball District 1 championships in 12U (Majors), 11U and 10U will be decided beginning today at Croffoot Park.

Winners in all three divisions advance to the best-of-3 state playoffs July 19-21 at Croffoot Park vs. the champions from District 2.

Here’s the lineup:

12U: Coeur d’Alene faces Sandpoint tonight at 5:30 in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series for the district title. Game 2 is Saturday at noon. Game 3, if necessary, is Sunday at noon.

11U: Hayden faces Coeur d’Alene tonight at 5:30 in Game 1 of a best-of-3 series for the district title. Game 2 is Saturday at noon. Game 3, if necessary, is Sunday at noon.

10U: Sandpoint plays Post Falls today at 3 p.m. in a loser-out game. The winner advance to the championship game vs. Lewiston on Saturday at 9 a.m. If Lewiston loses, an “if-necessary” championship game would be Sunday at 9 a.m.

Zags to play Southern Miss in

quarterfinals in Battle 4 Atlantis

The Gonzaga men’s basketball team will open the 2019 Battle 4 Atlantis against Southern Mississippi on Nov. 27 at 4 p.m. PST on ESPNU.

The quarterfinal matchups feature Michigan taking on Iowa State (9 am PST, ESPN) and North Carolina squaring off against Alabama (11:30 am PST, ESPN or ESPN2) in the top half of the bracket, while the bottom half of the bracket will feature Gonzaga facing Southern Miss and Oregon playing Seton Hall (6:30 pm PST, ESPN2).

If the Zags win, they would play Oregon or Seton Hall on Nov. 28 (Thanksgiving Day) at 1 p.m. PST on ESPN or ESPN2. The championship game is Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. PST on ESPN.

The ninth edition of the event will take place Nov. 27-29. All 12 games will be played in Atlantis, Paradise Island’s Imperial Arena, a 3,900-seat venue. Each game will be televised on the ESPN family of networks and available to stream via the ESPN app.

The Zags and Southern Miss meet for the first time. The Golden Eagles went 20-13 last season, finishing in a tie for second in Conference USA at 11-7. GU is 6-0 all-time versus current members from Conference USA.

In its only other appearance in the event, Gonzaga won two of its three games in the 2015 Battle 4 Atlantis, beating Washington, falling to Texas A&M and then defeating Connecticut for third-place. Kyle Wiltjer represented Gonzaga on the 2015 all-tournament team.

Boise State learns first foe

for its holiday tourney

HONOLULU — The Boise State men’s basketball team will square off against Georgia Tech in the first round of the 2019 Diamondhead Classic, ESPN Events announced.

The Broncos and Yellow Jackets, squaring off for the first time, are slated to tip at noon (HT) in the second game of the opening day of the tournament, Dec. 22 (Sunday). The game, played at the Stan Sheriff Center on the campus of Hawaii, will be televised on ESPNU.

The winner will advance to face either Houston or Portland at 11 a.m. (HT), Dec. 23, in the first of two semifinal games.

The championship game is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. (HT), Dec. 25, and will be televised on ESPN2.

Also competing in the Diamond Head Classic are Ball State, Hawaii, UTEP and Washington.

Boise State last played in the Diamond Head Classic in 2013, advancing to the championship game. The Broncos defeated Hawaii (62-61) and South Carolina (80-54) before falling to 14th-ranked Iowa State, 70-66.

The Diamond Head Classic will be the sixth major early-season tournament in the last seven years for Boise State. In addition to the 2013 Diamond Head Classic, the Broncos participated in the 2015 Wooden Legacy, 2016 Charleston Classic, 2017 Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach and most recently the 2018 Cayman Islands Classic.

Eastern Washington volleyball

to host alumni match

CHENEY — Eastern Washington University volleyball coach Leslie Flores-Cloud has announced the 2019 EWU Alumni Match, set for Saturday, Aug. 24 at 10 a.m.

The match will take place at Reese Court in Cheney. Alumni will compete against the current 2019 EWU volleyball squad in a game-like atmosphere complete with jerseys and referees.

Post-match, alumni will have a chance to have a meet and greet with the players and share stories and memories from their time as Eagles.

Cougars add Bergeron as

volunteer baseball assistant

PULLMAN — Greg Bergeron has been named Washington State baseball’s volunteer assistant coach, first-year head coach Brian Green announced Thursday.

Bergeron comes to WSU after working the previous four seasons at Long Beach State and owns two decades of coaching experience, primarily in Southern California. Prior to his four seasons at LBSU, Bergeron spent 11 seasons as an assistant coach and hitting coach at UC Irvine (2005-07), Cal State Fullerton (2008-11) and Tennessee (2012-15). Bergeron, who helped UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton earn trips to the College World Series, has helped develop over 100 players who have been selected in the MLB Draft, including five first-rounders and 11 who have advanced to the major leagues.

Following the 2017 season, Bergeron was promoted to associate head coach at Long Beach State after two seasons as an assistant coach.

Prior to UCI, Bergeron spent eight years coaching at the junior college level with a year at Cerritos College and seven at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif.
