HEADLINE: Right quote, wrong place

The front page of the July 6 Coeur d’Alene Press had the headline ‘I didn’t think this would happen’ in bold print directly above a picture of Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White. The placement of that quote gave readers the mistaken impression those words were spoken by Chief White. In fact, readers had to go to page A9 to read that quote was NOT from Chief White, but taken in part from a statement made by a 14-year-old bystander.

The sloppy placement of this headline was a real disservice to Chief White and the many men and women of law enforcement who responded admirably and professionally to a dangerous situation in City Park on July 4.
