Lums open wood bat tourney with two wins
COEUR d’ALENE — Alex Karns hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning — no easy feat with a wood bat — and the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen went on to beat the Vauxhall Spurs 18U 5-2 in their opening game Friday at the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic at Thorco Field.
Later Friday, Coeur d’Alene scored the last 12 runs of the game to beat the Edmonton Padres 15-7 and get off to a 2-0 start in pool play.
Against Vauxhall, Karns’ shot put Coeur d’Alene up 2-1 in the fourth. After Vauxhall pulled to within 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, Riley Smith delivered an RBI triple in the top of the seventh for the Lums, and scored on a passed ball.
Brandon Gay scattered six hits and struck out four to earn the win for Coeur d’Alene.
Against Edmonton, Jackson Scherr’s two-run single in the bottom of the third pulled Coeur d’Alene within 7-5. Landen Thompson followed with a run-scoring double.
Dylan Brum’s two-run single in the fifth boosted the Lums’ lead to 11-7.
Coeur d’Alene (23-9-1) is scheduled to play the Parkland Twins 18U tonight at 7 at Thorco Field as pool play continues.
