Update 3 p.m.: Coeur d’Alene Police Chief Lee White said at a press conference that the suspect, Tyler Rambo, may have been shot 10 or more times after firing once at police late Thursday night. Rambo, in critical condition at Kootenai Health, reportedly fired another shot earlier, which led police to chase him.

White said witnesses reported an unknown person was allegedly shot in the leg and police hope that person comes forward.

While the cause of the initial dispute is unknown, White said the suspect was repeatedly commanded to drop his firearm and disregarded them all.

At one point, White said, the suspect “slowed to a walk and refused at least 15 commands” to drop his weapon.

“He was known to us,” White said of the suspect, acknowledging some criminal background.

The chief said seven officers are on leave today, standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting.

White said repeatedly that it’s “extraordinary” there weren’t more people hurt in the shootings, because hundreds of Fourth of July revelers were in the immediate area. He attributed some of that good fortune to his department’s training.

The entire incident from start of chase to end of gunfire lasted only 30 seconds or so, White said.

“This scene was extremely chaotic,” he said.

Update 12:30 p.m.: Coeur d’Alene School District spokesman Scott Maben has confirmed that Rambo, 18, attended schools in the district between 2011 and 2018. While Maben said he is not legally allowed to say which schools, he did say Rambo left the district May 29, 2018, without graduating.

Update: Coeur d’Alene Police have scheduled a press conference today at 2:30. The Press will post updates on cdapress.com and on the The Press app. The Press will also provide Facebook Live video from the press conference. Tune into the Press FB page at 2:30 p.m.

COEUR d’ALENE — Kootenai Health officials confirmed that as of 7:50 this morning, Tyler Rambo was in critical condition.

Rambo, whose Facebook page says he attended school in Coeur d’Alene, is believed to be the person who fired on police late Thursday night in City Park, just after the Fourth of July fireworks display had concluded. Officers returned fire and hit the suspect multiple times, according to police reports.

Police say that at about 10:10 p.m. Thursday, officers in the area of Independence Point heard a gunshot. Several officers were in the area and witnessed a male running away. Officers immediately began to chase the man and followed him into City Park.

“At one point the suspect turned toward the officers and fired a handgun,” a press release from the Coeur d’Alene Police Department said. “Several officers then fired at the suspect, hitting him multiple times.”

The suspect was transported to Kootenai Health for medical treatment, the press release said. There are no reports of anyone else being hit by gunfire.

Because the shooting involved Coeur d’Alene police, Idaho State Police is the agency investigating.

Coeur d’Alene Police indicated this morning that a press conference would be held later today.
