Lums sweep, clinch top seed to districts
COEUR d’ALENE — Peyton Childers hit two-run doubles in the first and fourth innings, finishing with five RBIs as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen beat the Lewis-Clark Twins 12-2 in the first game of a class AA North Idaho League doubleheader at Thorco Field on Tuesday.
In the nightcap, Alex Karns singled to score Marcus Manzardo with the winning run in a 3-2 win to earn the sweep for Coeur d’Alene.
“Peyton had a great day at the plate throughout the day,” Coeur d’Alene coach Erik Karns said. “Everybody on the team had good days with some timely hits. And our approaches were really good.”
Breyson Coppess hit a two-run double to tie the game at 2-2 in the first inning for Coeur d’Alene. Trent Elstad scored three runs for the Lums in the opener.
David Kraak allowed three hits over five innings for Coeur d’Alene (21-9-1, 9-1 NIL), which clinched the top seed to the Area A (district) tournament in two weeks at Thorco Field. The Lums clinched at least a tie for the league title, and holds the tiebreaker over Lewis-Clark, should the two teams tie for the league title, by taking three of four from the Twins in league play.
Coeur d’Alene returns to action in the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Fourth of July Wood Bat Classic on Friday at Thorco Field, facing the Vauxhall Spurs at 4:30 p.m., then the Edmonton Padres at 7.
“David came in and did what David does, and did a good job of keeping them off balance,” Karns said. “They were probably our best two games defensively all summer, and we were able to keep their offense down and in check.”
