Lakeside girls clinch North Star League title

| January 29, 2019 12:33 AM

PLUMMER — A third-quarter rally by the Lakeside girls not only helped the Knights beat visiting Clark Fork on Monday night ... it helped Lakeside clinch the North Star League title.

Five players scored between 7 and 10 points as Lakeside beat the Wampus Cats 49-45. The game was tied at 21 at intermission, but the Knights outscored Clark Fork 13-5 in the third quarter.

Clark Fork eventually tied the game in the fourth quarter, but a basket by Lakeside’s Samantha Adrian put the Knights ahead for good, with free throws icing the victory, Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said.

“We had pretty balanced scoring tonight, and we came out in the third quarter playing tough defense and made some stops,” Dohrman added.

Senior Tommia Pakootas led the Knights with 10 points, Alyssa SiJohn scored 9, while Suzzana Pakootas and Adrian scored 8 each.

Their efforts helped Lakeside clinch the NSL with a 6-2 league mark. Although Genesis Prep beat the Knights twice, the Jaguars have lost three league games.

The Knights last won the NSL in 2016-17, with Genesis Prep winning the league title last season.

Lakeside (8-9 overall) returns to action when the district tournament begins on Feb. 6.

Kootenai 52, Troy 43

HARRISON FLATS — A big fourth quarter by the Warriors — and senior Gage Maitland in particular — helped host Kootenai defeat Troy in a nonconference matchup.

The Warriors (9-4) trailed by 14 in the third quarter, but outscored the Trojans 25-6 in the final period.

“It had been kind of a lazy, lethargic game for us until the fourth quarter. It’s like a switch went off,” Kootenai coach Mike Maitland said. “Gage came alive — he had 15 points in the fourth quarter — and we used a half-court trap to fource a few turnovers. The boys did great in the fourth quarter.”

Gage Maitland scored 29 points to lead all scorers, while Triston Usdrowski added eight points for the Warriors, who host Clark Fork tonight.

Zachary Stoner led Troy with 24 points.
