Coeur d'Alene handles 4A IEL-leading Moscow

| January 27, 2019 12:00 AM

MOSCOW — Kale Edwards scored 23 points and Mayson Blakeley-Whittaker scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Coeur d’Alene Vikings, in second place in the 5A Inland Empire League, past the 4A IEL-leading Moscow Bears 73-60 on Saturday at Bear Den.

Carter Friesz scored 17 points for Coeur d’Alene, which held Moscow’s Gabe Quinnett to 14 points in the win.

“I thought we did a good job defensively tonight,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Tony Hanna, whose team held Moscow to 26 second-half points. “We mixed it up a little bit between zone and man, and our gameplan was to keep Quinnett from scoring, and Carter did a great job on him tonight. We played really well as a team tonight. Kale played really well tonight and Mayson hit some big shots for us in the fourth quarter. We’d talked getting the ball to our posts (Edwards and Friesz) early, and it opened up some things late in the game.”

Coeur d’Alene (12-4) hosts Post Falls on Thursday.

Moscow is 12-3.

Sandpoint 70

Priest River 39

SANDPOINT — The Bulldogs shot 27 of 49 (55 percent) from the field and saw 10 different players score points in a nonleague win over the Spartans at Les Rogers Court.

“We shot it very well tonight,” Sandpoint coach Wade Engelson said. “Our guys executed well, didn’t force up shots and were always looking for the open players.”

Junior guard Kobe Banks found Ryan Roos for a pair of transition 3s in the first two minutes, which set the tone for the rest of the game.

“One of the things we’ve noticed is that we’re a very good catch-and-shoot team,” Engelson said. “If we run our stuff and dish the ball, then we shoot it pretty well — the statistics back that up.”

Case in point: The Bulldogs (7-8) shot 8 of 11 from 3 in the first half. And five different players made a 3.

Yet Priest River junior Caden Brennan made a game out of things in the third quarter by hitting three triples of his own and by making key stops on the other end. The Spartans outscored the hot-shooting Bulldogs 17-16 in the third, but coming back from a 27-point halftime deficit was too tall a task.

Sandpoint made 27 field goals on 14 assists, and had six players score at least six points. Roos led the Bulldogs with his 12-point, four-rebound, three-assist outing, and teammates Brandon Casey (11 points, six rebounds) and Bruin Jones (11 points, five assists) weren’t far behind.

Brennan added six rebounds and three blocks alongside his game-high 18 points.

Priest River (0-12) plays at Timberlake on Thursday. Sandpoint travels to Moscow next Saturday.

“We got a lot of turnovers early out of our press,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said. “And they settled down and handled it better. “We shot terribly tonight, and we turned it over 21 times.”

Brennen Atkins scored 16 points for Kellogg (3-12, 1-2), which had a potential game-tying shot rim out at the buzzer.
