TRAPPING: No kill traps

| January 25, 2019 12:00 AM

To the 2019 Idaho Legislature, the House Resources and Conservation Committee, Fish and Game officials, Ed Schriever, Jonathan Oppenheimer of the Idaho Conservation League, Idaho Trappers Association and Justin Webb. In reference to the article in the Coeur d’Alene Press, Tuesday, Jan. 22, “New Idaho Wolf Trap Rules Set to Protect Dogs on Walks.”

Thank you for looking at this problem. Unfortunately the traps can be the ones described as harmless or the traps that can be set are kill traps. These traps are baited and left to attract animals. Our dogs’ noses are very efficient and can find these traps with no problem.

This can be easily solved if the new law says no kill traps. There was a couple in Cougar Gulch where they lived and walked their dog, that watched their dog die as they could do nothing. The classes are helpful but not much good against one of these traps. Your dog dies in a matter of minutes as you watch.

Trapping is part of our heritage and should continue, but with some common sense. Kill traps are not necessary.
