Eastern names Eti Ena

new defensive coordinator

Eastern Washington University and Inchelium (Wash.) High graduate Eti Ena has been elevated to defensive coordinator, Eagle head coach Aaron Best announced Wednesday. Ena takes the place of Jeff Schmedding, who left after 15 years at EWU to become outside linebackers coach and co-special teams coordinator at Boise State.

“I am so excited for this opportunity,” Ena said. “I love this program and the people we have here at EWU. I want to thank the coaches I get to work with and the players for all their hard work and dedication. We have made strides defensively the last couple years and now it’s time to Advance The Standard even further.”

Best said Ena will retain his associate head coach title and continue to coach defensive ends.

“Coach Ena is a true and natural leader,” Best said. “He loves to mold young men and now he gets to do that from another chair. Eti is a true EKG (Eastern Kind of Guy) in our program.”

A year after allowing 33.4 points per game, the Eagles allowed just 22.7 in 2018 for the team’s best performance since 1997. Eastern’s nine games of allowing 20 points for fewer in 2018 equals the school record also set in 1997, 1981, 1964 and 1949. In eight Big Sky Conference games, Eastern allowed the fewest points per game (16.9) while ranking second in total defense (346.6), second in passing defense (185.4) and second in rushing defense (161.2).

The Eagles finished 12-3 overall and advanced to the NCAA Division I Championship game after registering three home victories in the FCS Playoffs.

Eastern captured a share of the league title with a 7-1 record.
