ELKS HOOP SHOOT

For the first time, the Coeur d’Alene Elks Hoop Shoot was held at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum on Jan. 13. While the venue may have changed, the results were strikingly similar with six kids earning a chance at the District Hoop Shoot in Kellogg.

Former National Finalist Kamryn Pickford raced out to an early lead in the girls’ 12-13 age group, hitting 7 of her 10 shots in round one — two better than her nearest competitors. Bailey Nipp-Berger applied some pressure with a strong second round, giving her a total score of 16 of 25. Pickford was the final shooter in the age group and after missing a couple of shots ended the contest with 10 straight good free throws.

The 20 points that Pickford garnered also earned her her second Waide Hamner Top Gun award in the last three years.

Marissa Needs placed third in the age group.

The Hamner Award for the boys also waited until the very end of the day to be decided. While the field in the boys’ 12-13 division was loaded, it looked like this was going to end in a three-way battle.

Isaac Ziegler opened the contest and threw down the gauntlet by hitting 9 of his first-round shots. Not to be outdone, Stockton Montague was perfect in round one. The last shooter of the round was two-time Idaho Hoop Shoot champion and National Finalist Deacon Kiesbuy, and he kept within striking distance with 8 of 10.

In round two, Ziegler missed his first shot, then reeled off 10 in a row. After another miss he closed out the round with three more buckets and a final tally of 22 of 25 — so far, the best performance of the day. Montague was consistent in round two and he also finished with 22 of 25. To forge a three-way tie, Kiesbuy would have to be near perfect. A cold spell in the middle of the round knocked him out of the race for first and he settled for third place with a final score of 17.

In the tie-breaker, Montague hit 3 of 5 to edge Ziegler’s 2 points. The win not only advanced Montague to districts but also secured his first Hamner Award.

The Hamner Award was tight on the boys’ side of the ledger. Jordan Carlson won the 10-11 year-old age division with 21 of 25 in a competition that saw the highest scores in the competition. Following Carlson were Paxton Winey and Jace Ostlund in a tie for second with 19 (won by Winey in a double shoot-off 7-5). Right on their heels with 18 of 25 were Brett Johnson, Ben McElvany and Cody Trost. All six were in contention for the victory until the final shots were put up.

From the get go, the boys’ 8-9 division was a head-to-head battle between Tyler Zachary and Gavin Trost. Zachary opened the competition with a first-round score of 8 of 10 while Tosi finished the round missing just one shot for the early lead. In the second round, Zachary was almost flawless, missing just 2 of his 15 shots. The strong second round gave him 21 points. Tosi started his round two with a tough cold streak. He missed five of his first six shots and settled for second place. Evan Robertson took third with 14 points.

It was a tight race after round one of the girls’ 10-11 year-old competition. Five competitors sank six of their first-round shots and two more made 5 of the 10 shots. With such a tight competition, it came down to round two. Tabitha Lopez had the best second round, making 10 of her 15 shots, including six in a row, to score a total of 15 of 25 and earn the win. Malia Miller and Courtney Johnson went to a shoot-off for second place, each finishing with 13 points. Miller prevailed in the shoot-off 3-2 after Johnson’s final shot was negated due to a line violation.

Tori Ellwood took a commanding lead in the girls’ 8-9 age group with seven points in round one — two better than her nearest competitors. The rest of the field wouldn’t get any closer as Ellwood finished with 15 of 25. Jaya Felix was able to match Ellwood in the second round and finished in second at 13, one better than Kailee Beck.

Nearly 5,000 kids from 27 schools participated in the Hoop Shoot at the school level in the Coeur d’Alene/Post Falls/Rathdrum area.
