Timberlake tops Bonners, clinches top seed to districts

BONNERS FERRY — Taryn Soumas scored 17 points, McKeeley Tonkin added 16 and the Timberlake Tigers clinched the top seed to the 3A District 1 tournament with a 57-47 Intermountain League victory over the Bonners Ferry Badgers on Saturday.

Brooke Jessen added 13 points for Timberlake (16-2, 4-0 IML), which also cliched a tie for the league title. This year, the top seed hosts the first two nights of the district tourney; in recent years, the event has been at North Idaho College.

Holly Ansley scored 12 points for Bonners Ferry (13-5, 3-2), which led Timberlake at halftime of the first meeting Jan. 8, before falling 45-33 in Spirit Lake.

“With them, it’s kind of pick your poison,” Bonners Ferry coach Travis Hinthorn said. “Jessen lit us up down there (with 20 points), and this time, Tonkin (four) and Soumas (two) combined for six 3s. That’s why they’re good.”

Baylee Blackmore had 11 points and 16 rebounds for the Badgers, who play host to Stillwater Christian on Friday.

Timberlake returns to action Saturday at Kellogg.

COEUR d’ALENE — The Timberwolves’ 13-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the visiting Bears, last year’s Washington state 4A champions.

Camryn Skaife hit three of her four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter for Central Valley (14-2), which outscored Lake City 23-9 in the final eight minutes.

Aubrey Avery and Brooklyn Rewers each scored 15 points for Lake City (17-3). Dejah Wilson added nine points and six steals, and Bridget Rieken had five points, 10 rebounds and four steals.

Lake City wraps up the regular season Friday at home vs. Coeur d’Alene.

PRIEST RIVER — The Wildcats put the clamps down on defense and held the Spartans to only three field goals in the Intermountain League win.

“I thought we played super organized defense,” Kellogg coach Jana Kothe said. “I think we were able to change it up quickly and get everyone in. We were working really well together defensively.”

Led by senior guard Taeya Sheppard’s team-high eight steals, the Wildcats (8-8, 2-2 IML) forced 27 turnovers in the defensive affair. Priest River’s offense couldn’t get anything going without senior point guard Jasmine Martin, who was out with an ankle sprain, and the Spartans (1-11, 0-5) failed to make a field goal throughout the second and third quarters. A runner at the free-throw line from Spartan Liann Kren finally got Priest River into double digits with three seconds to play.

Kellogg’s Jaron Figueroa and Hailey Cheney scored a game-high nine points apiece, while Priest River’s Karah Fink posted a seven-point, seven-rebound and five-steal effort — all of which were team highs.

“I think we had a very balanced effort,” Kothe said. “They passed the ball well offensively, so it’s hard to single out one player in particular. They all gave a good effort.”

The Wildcats will play host to Timberlake next Saturday.

Priest River will play at Upper Columbia Academy on Tuesday.

POST FALLS — Jaden House hit the go-ahead free throw with 1.6 seconds remaining, and the Miners scored the game’s final five points in the final minute to beat the Jaguars in a North Star League game at Post Falls Middle School.

“We had really good teammwork and really focused on their two main players and focused on where they were on the court,” Wallace coach Nichole Farkas said. “Things were just clicking on the court for us tonight. We knew after the first half that they were going to come back, and had to weather whatever storm was coming. We just had to keep playing.”

Megan Morin scored 13 points and Maggie Howard added 12 for Wallace (5-9, 3-2 NSL), which hosts Kootenai on Tuesday.

Bella Murekatete scored 23 points, Rachel Schroeder 18 for Genesis Prep (7-8, 3-3), which travels to St. George’s on Tuesday.

“We did not do the little things like getting to our spots defensively, and trust ourselves,” Genesis Prep coach Brandon Haas said. “We’re searching.”
