Cardinal men nearly break single-game scoring record

MEN’S BASKETBALL

PENDLETON, Ore. — Seven North Idaho College players scored in double figures and the Cardinals’ bench outscored Blue Mountain in a 137-69 rout in Northwest Athletic Conference play Saturday.

Alphonso Anderson scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead NIC (16-2, 5-0), which fell one point short of the school’s single-game scoring record.

The Cardinals got 71 points from their reserves, led by Emmitt Taylor III with 17 points and former Lake City High standout James Carlson with 16. Jaden Dewar had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Nate Pryor had 11 assists.

Jarod Greene hit 10 of 11 from the field and chipped in 20 points for NIC.

“We try to get up and down, and press,” said NIC coach Corey Symons, whose squad outrebounded the Timberwolves 59-17. “That’s where we killed them, off the glass. And we forced a lot of turnovers in the first half.”

NIC topped the 100-point mark for the sixth straight game. The Cardinals shot better from the field (67.4 percent) than they did from the free-throw line 36.4 percent).

Mekhi Foreman of Blue Mountain (4-12, 2-3) led all scorers with 23 points.

NIC plays host to Columbia Basin on Monday at 4 p.m., in a game time moved up from the original schedule. As part of Coaches vs. Cancer week, coaches will wear sneakers, and a donation jar for cancer awareness will be set up at Christianson Gym.

PENDLETON, Ore. — Alex Carlton scored 23 points, hitting 7 of 11 from 3-point range, to lead the Cardinals past the Timberwolves in a Northwest Athletic Conference game.

Heidi Sellman had 10 points and eight rebounds for NIC (13-4, 3-2 NWAC), which outscored Blue Mountain 39-22 in the second half.

NIC hosts Columbia Basin on Monday at 2 p.m.

Ammarae Broncheau scored nine points for Blue Mountain (2-13, 0-5).

OREGON CITY, Ore. — The Cougars, the top-ranked team in the NJCAA polls this week, looked the part and wrestled like it against the Cardinals.

“They’re a super-talented team and we’re not going to beat them by just being talented,” NIC interim coach Brandon Richardson said. “We’ve got to put the conditioning in over the next two weeks, have some long days and get better. We’re just going to have to be in 100 percent and believe in the process to make it happen.”

Clackamas had pins in five matches, with NIC’s lone win coming by a decision by Trager Abatti in the 174-pound bout.

NIC competes in the Clackamas Open starting today at 10 a.m.
