LOREN BENOIT/Press Lakeland’s Jaret Taylor shoots a 3-pointer against Sandpoint in the first half of Friday night’s Battle for the Paddle boys spirit game at Hawk Court.

RATHDRUM — Jalen Skalskiy totaled 23 points and six rebounds and Lakeland jumped all over Sandpoint early en route to a 66-43 victory in 4A Inland Empire League play Friday night at Hawk Court.

Skalskiy scored seven of his points in the first quarter, Ben Zubaly six of his eight, Jaret Taylor all six of his points and Josiah Haaland four of his 14 for Lakeland (6-8, 1-1 4A IEL), which led 27-9 after one quarter.

“Josiah and Jaret really played solid and got us off to a hot start in the first quarter,” Lakeland assistant coach Tyrel Derrick said. “Ben Zubaly attacked their pressure, getting into the paint and drawing contact. Jalen did a great job attacking the boards and giving us a scoring presence.”

Alex Stockton led Sandpoint (6-7, 0-2) with 22 points.

Lakeland returns to action Jan. 29 at Moscow.

COEUR d’ALENE — Anytime a team reaches double-figures in 3-point field goals, it makes things a little tougher to notch a win for the opposing team.

Seth Hanson scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter and Jack Kiesbuy had nine of his 15 points, but the Timberwolves came up short to the Bengals — who hit 15 3-pointers — in a 5A Inland Empire League game.

“Give Lewiston credit, when you shoot the ball like that, it’s tough to win,” Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. “They shot the ball really well and we didn’t get going offensively until the second half. We need to do a better job on the defensive end and get started a little earlier on the offensive end.”

Josh Stellflug had 21 points and seven rebounds for Lake City (2-12, 0-3 5A IEL), which hosts Coeur d’Alene next Friday.

Dylan Johnson scored 23 points for Lewiston (5-8, 1-2).

KELLOGG — A hot start to the third quarter and another strong game from Moscow standout Gabe Quinnett led the visiting Bears to a nonconference win at Andrews Gymnasium.

Quinnett scored 14 of his game-high 28 points in the second quarter, leading Moscow (12-2) to a 33-22 halftime lead. The Bears then outscored Kellogg 22-7 in the third quarter to put the game away.

“We had no answer for Quinnett; he’s a good player and this is the second time he’s done that to us,” Kellogg coach Jeff Nearing said. “We played pretty good ball until the third quarter. They came out hard (after halftime) and we didn’t respond.”

Graden Nearing, Brandon Miller and Tyrel Davis each scored seven points for the Wildcats (2-11), who travel to Priest River today.
