Another big win for Lakeland

| January 19, 2019 12:00 AM

RATHDRUM — The vibe in the Lakeland locker room was one of focus and determination.

Then it showed on the court.

Katy Ryan had 19 points, 15 rebounds, three assists and five blocked shots for the Hawks in a 49-35 win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs in the Battle for the Paddle spirit game at Hawk Court on Friday.

“Defensively, I thought we did a really good job of being aggressive when we could and being in the right place,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “Our rotations were good and the kids were fired up and ready to play. You never know what you’re going to get with a spirit game, but the vibe in the locker room was that they wanted to get out and play, and they certainly played well.”

Lakeland led 23-8 at halftime, but Sandpoint cut the deficit to 35-24 after the third quarter.

Lakeland beat Sandpoint for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

“Sandpoint made a run in the third quarter and closed the gap, but the girls withstood the charge and knocked down some shots and tightened the defense and bringing the momentum back to our bench,” Seymour said. “It was a good win on many fronts. They just played steady and solid for four quarters.”

Taylor Elpers had 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists for Lakeland (7-10, 2-0 4A IEL), which travels to Moscow on Thursday.

Maddie Morgan scored 11 points for Sandpoint (3-12, 1-1).

COEUR d’ALENE — Sara Muehlhausen had 11 points and three blocked shots to lead the Timberwolves past the Bengals, clinching the 5A Inland Empire League title and top seed to the Region 1 tournament.

“One of our big issues tonight was foul trouble, and Sara was really key for us tonight,” Lake City coach James Anderson said. “We played a lot of minutes, battled and that’s the kind of depth we’ll need to win these games.”

Lake City wrapped up the league title after Coeur d’Alene lost at Post Falls in other action on Friday.

Dejah Wilson had 10 points and five steals, Bridget Rieken nine points and 12 rebounds and Brooklyn Rewers 10 points and three blocks for Lake City (17-2, 5-0 5A IEL), which outscored Lewiston 17-10 in the third quarter after trailing 26-25 at halftime.

“We made a couple of adjustments to our press at the half,” Anderson said. “In the second half, we got after it a little better. We looked a little sluggish all night, and just couldn’t snap out of it.”

The game was tied at 12 at halftime.

“Obviously that was not a pretty game on all accounts,” Post Falls coach Marc Allert said. “But I do like the way we responded in the fourth quarter. They know they can do it (win in league); now that we’ve done it, it gives us a little more confidence.”

Coeur d’Alene plays host to Sandpoint on Wednesday. Post Falls closes out the regular season Jan. 29 at home vs. Lewiston, with the winner claiming the No. 3 seed to the 5A Region 1 tournament.
