HARRISON FLATS — Kootenai did everything to give themselves a chance late.

Quick start in the first quarter.

Keeping it a two possession game headed into the fourth quarter.

Then, visiting Wallace showed its balance in the final eight minutes.

Erik Brackebusch scored 28 points for the Miners in a 62-53 win over the Warriors in a North Star League game on Wednesday.

“We came out shooting really well in the first quarter and they weren’t,” said Kootenai coach Mike Maitland, whose team led 15-10 after the first quarter before falling behind 31-28 at halftime. “Everyone on the team was scoring, and that was a good thing. But Brackebusch hit everything he threw up it seemed. It was a fun game. They played a good game.”

Triston Usdrowski had 17 points and five rebounds and Gage Maitland 16 points, five assists and five rebounds for Kootenai (6-3, 2-3 NSL), which travels to Lakeside tonight at 7.

Zack Welch scored 15 points for Wallace (12-0, 5-0), which faces Genesis Prep at Post Falls Middle School on Saturday at 3 p.m.

MOSCOW — There were plenty of things to be happy about coming from the first half at Bear Den for the visiting Tigers.

But that third quarter ...

“It was the tale of two halves,” Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. “Quinnett scored 16 in the third, and that was everything. The first half, it was great. I was happy with a lot of things. But that dang third quarter.”

Sheldon Kistler scored 10 points and J.T. Wilfong added nine points for Timberlake (3-9), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE — As Timberlake coach Kelly Amos described it, the dual between the Tigers and Wildcats was exactly what league matchups should be.

Two teams, fighting right to the finish.

Timberlake’s Garrett Rickett pinned Robby Bublitz 3:42 into the bout at 285-pounds, giving the Tigers a win over the Wildcats in a match between Intermountain League schools.

“We had a 40-39 lead going into the heavyweights, so the winner was going to take the match,” Amos said. “Garrett stepped up and got a big pin to win the dual for us. We match up pretty evenly with Kellogg right now and knew it was going to be tight. This was kind of the way league duals are supposed to be.”

Timberlake hosts the Van Tuinstra Duals on Friday and Saturday at Timberlake High.

Wrestling begins on Friday at 5 p.m., then again on Saturday at 9 a.m., with championship finals at 2 p.m.
