SENTENCE: A blow to many

| January 16, 2019 12:00 AM

After coming home from my 16-year-old’s hockey game Saturday, I picked up the paper and was shocked when I read the article about Judge Wayman’s ruling related to the death of Jacob Leeder. I had to read it several times to be sure I was interpreting it correctly.

The anguish the Leeder family is going through must be simply impossible to endure. When something like this happens, victims’ families learn the true meaning of words like devastation, hopelessness and anguish. I know because when I was 13, my father was killed by a drunk driver. It changed our lives forever. Frankly it hurts to this day and I can’t fathom what it would be like to lose a child that way.

My father died in 1983 and it is very hard to accept that our system of justice has gone nowhere in that time. It shouldn’t be called that because there is no justice here. I’m no saint, but Judge Wayman, you should be ashamed because this is a slap in the face to the family and to all families who have lost loved ones this way. I hope you never have to go through what this poor family is going through. And I know what I’m talking about.
