Timberlake runs wild in Battle for the Buck game

| January 13, 2019 12:00 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — In spirit games such as the Battle for the Buck, and in the case of first-year Timberlake coach Mike Menti, there can be some mystery.

Jacob James scored 18 points — 14 in the second half — and Dawson Cramer added 14 points — 12 in the second half — as the Tigers ran past the Priest River Spartans 84-52 on Saturday in the Intermountain League opener for both schools.

“In these spirit games, you never know how it’s going to go,” Menti said. “The boys followed the gameplan and executed really, really well. Dawson really sparked us in the second half and gave us a good push in the fourth quarter.”

Sheldon Kistler scored 15 points for Timberlake (3-7), which hosts Lakeland on Tuesday.

Brandon McCracken scored 20 points for Priest River.

SANDPOINT — Moscow earned 32 of its 67 points from the charity stripe as the Bears moved to 2-0 in 4A Inland Empire League play with a 67-50 win over Sandpoint (6-6, 0-1 IEL) at Les Rogers Court.

“We have to defend at a higher level,” Sandpoint coach Wade Engelson said. “And we had great looks all game long, but we went cold as a team. But our guys really competed, and I thought it was a fun game to watch and coach.”

Moscow senior Gabe Quinnett led all scorers with 28 points, but didn’t make a 3; 13 of his points came off of free throws. As a team, Moscow went 32-for-40 from the line.

Three Sandpoint starters scored in double figures, while reserve guard Elijah Larson chipped in a season-high 9 points off the bench. Engelson was complimentary of point guard Bruin Jones’ performance as well.

“Bruin Jones did a great job of getting us into everything we were running,” Engelson said. “He distributed the ball well, took care of it and got us good looks during the game.”

Sandpoint will look for its first 4A IEL regular-season win since the 2015-16 season against Lakeland in the annual Battle for the Paddle on Friday.

St. Maries 60

ST. MARIES — A second-half comeback fell just short as the host Lumberjacks lost to the Bulldogs, ranked No. 3 in 2A this week by the state’s media, in the Central Idaho League opener for both schools.

Trey Dreadfulwater scored 12 of his 19 points in the first half for Grangeville (10-2), which jumped out to a 40-18 halftime lead.

“They got some easy baskets in transition,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “We knew that going in, and we still didn’t do a good job getting back. We didn’t handle their pressure well in the first quarter.”

Jackson Pritchard scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half for St. Maries (9-4), which came as close as three points after pressing throughout the final two quarters.

“It was a good comeback,” Chase said. “I was super proud of our kids; they fought so hard.”

St. Maries returns to action next Saturday at home vs. Orofino in CIL play.
