Sandpoint topples Moscow in 4A IEL opener

| January 13, 2019 12:00 AM

SANDPOINT — Led by Maddie Morgan’s key 3-pointers and a season-high 20 points from the bench, Sandpoint opened 4A Inland Empire League play with a 48-37 win over Moscow on Saturday at Les Rogers Court.

“We had a few of our starters that didn’t have their best games tonight,” Sandpoint head coach Will Love said. “But I told the girls that we’re a family, and families lift each other up. So I was really proud with the whole bench for their contributions tonight.”

As a unit, Sandpoint reserves Aly Lish, Brooklen Steiger and Kaylee Banks made their first six shots and scored 13 points in the first half, which led to a 25-13 halftime lead. But Moscow, which went 5 for 19 from the first half, rallied back in the third quarter and eventually reclaimed a 34-33 lead early in the fourth quarter. After a quiet first half, Moscow junior Rheanna Anderson scored seven of her 13 points in the third quarter.

“We haven’t had the lead that much this season, so it was a learning experience for them,” Love said. “But once they were able to figure out [Moscow’s] extended zone, I think that got them at ease. Maddie Morgan hit a few big shots and you could really see her confidence rise with every make.”

Morgan scored all of her game-high 15 points on 3-pointers — two of which came as the Bulldogs reclaimed the lead in the fourth quarter.

Kaylee Banks scored a season-high 12 points and had a team-high three steals off the bench, while Dawson Driggs grabbed a team-high nine rebounds to go with her 8 points. Anderson led the way for the Bears (6-10, 0-2 4A IEL) with 13 points.

Sandpoint (3-10) will travel to Lakeland (6-9, 1-0 IEL) for the annual Battle for the Paddle on Friday.

Rachel Schroeder led Genesis Prep (6-7, 2-2) with 10 points. The Jaguars played without Washington State signee Bella Murekatete, who did not play due to violation of team rules, Genesis Prep coach Brandon Haas said.

“While we had prepared for [Murekatete], we adjusted our defense and offense well for a last minute change,” first-year Clark Fork coach Jordan Adams said. “I was informed that this is the first time that we have beaten Genesis Prep. since our seniors’ freshman years, so you can imagine their excitement post-game.”

“Got to give a lot of credit to Clark Fork for playing a fantastic game tonight,” Haas said. “They did the little things well that ended up leading them to a win tonight. We did not take care of the ball like we should have. Fortunately we have a lot of season left to clean up some things.”
