Cardinal women get in, out of zone

COEUR d’ALENE — It took a while — 30 minutes to be exact — but North Idaho College got Walla Walla to play its style of game.
NIC, which led 51-50 after the third quarter, outscored defending Northwest Athletic Conference champion Walla Walla 21-8 in the fourth quarter on the way to a 72-58 win at Rolly Williams Court on Saturday.
“We finally figured out their zone in the fourth quarter,” said NIC coach Chris Carlson, whose team hit five 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes to pull away. “We really got them out of what they wanted to do. Walla Walla had to go to a man-to-man defense, and I feel that we’re a tough guard. It took a while, but we were able to shoot them out of the zone.”
Alex Carlton scored 16 points — 12 in the fourth quarter on 3-pointers — and Sydnie Peterson added 14 points for NIC (12-3, 2-1 NWAC), which travels to Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday.
McKenzie Gunter scored 16 points for Walla Walla (12-5, 2-2).

COEUR d’ALENE — Nate Pryor led four Cardinals in double-figures with 23 points as North Idaho College beat Walla Walla 101-75 in a Northwest Athletic Conference game at Rolly Williams Court.
Alphonso Anderson had 21 points and seven rebounds, RayQuan Evans 18 points and eight assits for NIC (14-2, 3-0 NWAC), which travels to Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday.
Forrest Smith scored 21 points for Walla Walla (8-9, 2-2).

MISSOULA, Mont. — University of Providence — formerly University of Great Falls — won five of the six matches actually contested against the Cardinals.
That made Izaiah Duran’s pin for at 165 pounds all that more important for NIC, which won by forfeit in four other weights, holding off the Argos at Sentinel High.
“We lost some of the battles, but won the war,” NIC interim coach Brandon Richardson said. “They had four open weights and have been having some problems with their lineup. They brought six guys that were ready to roll, and they showed it tonight. It was kind of a bittersweet one because it was kind of a repeat of what we saw in the first semester (a 37-7 loss on Nov. 2 in Great Falls), and it shows us we’ve got a lot to work on.”
Richardson is coaching the Cardinals as head coach Pat Whitcomb and assistant Keri Stanley are away from the team pending the results of an investigation into academic practices within the program.
Duran pinned Josh Beckler in 4:38.
“Izaiah, he’s never out of a match,” Richardson said. “I think he was getting frustrated. We had a gameplan going in, and he’s really grown and evolved over the year. He really stepped up tonight.”
NIC (8-4) returns to action against Southwestern Oregon and Umpqua on Friday in Roseburg, Ore.
