Lakeland posts first league win since 2012
RATHDRUM — Junior Mel Loutzenhiser scored 15 points and the Lakeland Hawks snapped a 24-game losing streak in 4A Inland Empire League play by beating the Moscow Bears 55-45 in the league opener for both teams Thursday night at Hawk Court.
Lauryn Cooper had 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals for Lakeland (6-7), which last won a league game in the 2011-12 season. The Hawks had beaten Moscow at regionals in the 2014 and ’17 seasons.
“I’m just really happy for the girls; they’ve been working pretty hard in practice the last few days,” Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. “It was nice to see them close it out.
Katy Ryan added 10 points and 12 rebounds for Lakeland, which outscored the Bears 9-2 in the second quarter after trailing 13-11 after one.
“I was really pleased with our defense the last couple minutes of first quarter, and in the second quarter,” Seymour said.
Megan Jung led Moscow with 16 points, and Peyton Claus added 12.
Lakeland plays at Coeur d’Alene on Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE — McKeeley Tonkin scored 12 of her game-high 15 points in the second half as the Tigers beat the Wildcats in an Intermountain League game.
“We played really well in the first half, and I was happy with our defense,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, whose team led 21-10 at halftime. “I was really happy, but we missed a lot of shots in the first half. We played the same in the second half, but just made more shots. We got the same looks in the second half, but just more went in.”
Karissa Willis scored 13 points — eight in the second half — for Timberlake (13-2, 2-0 IML), which hosts Priest River in the Battle for the Buck spirit game on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Hailey Cheney scored eight points for Kellogg (7-7, 1-1), which travels to Bonners Ferry on Saturday.

PLUMMER — After the host Knights jumped out to a 14-5 lead after one quarter, the Jaguars took over in the middle two quarters to capture the North Star League game.
Bella Murekatete scored 10 of her 29 points in the second quarter for Genesis Prep (6-6, 2-1 NSL), and Rachel Schroeder tallied eight of her 24 in that quarter.
“We came out and did exactly what we planned,” Lakeside coach Chris Dohrman said. “The girls did a fantastic job. We held them on defense, we got out and got some scores, we were moving the ball well. In the second and third quarters, Genesis Prep turned some turnovers into some easy points.”
Tommia Pakootas scored 17 points, Alyssa SiJohn 10 for Lakeside (5-8, 3-1), which returns to action next Thursday at home vs. Kootenai.
Genesis Prep plays host to Clark Fork on Saturday at Post Falls Middle School.
