Some treats for us, them to go with the guessing

And with the end of the College Football Playoff championship game — whoops, Clemson just stopped Alabama on fourth down again — the college football season has pretty much come to an end, other than the upcoming all-star games.

Actually, as far as Gridiron Guesses is concerned, the season ended with Eastern Washington’s loss to North Dakota State in the FCS title game on Saturday.

(Also, let the record show I did pick Clemson to beat Alabama. Jason will vouch for it.)

Anyway, we were both right on Washington State beating Iowa State in the Alamo Bowl, and we both missed on Eastern beating North Dakota State.

We both picked Boise State to beat whoever they played in the First Responder Bowl, but obviously we threw that one out. That disaster of a bowl game, aborted in the first quarter because of weather, fit the sponsor’s motto perfectly — “Like it never even happened.”

Kudos to WSU for snapping a two-game bowl losing streak, and finishing 10th in the final AP poll — though it seemed kinda puzzling the Cougs would move up two spots, ahead of Washington, after beating an inferior foe than the Huskies faced for beating Wazzu in Pullman, then going on to win the Pac-12 championship for a berth in the Rose Bowl. U-Dub dropped four spots, from ninth to 13th, after losing to Ohio State. Seems like the Huskies should have finished higher than WSU, since they beat the Cougs.

As for Eastern, the Eags’ margin for error going in was slim against the mighty Bison.

Throw in three turnovers and too many penalties — some which wiped out huge gains by EWU — and that was just too much to overcome.

And as for Boise State, you feel for the players, particularly the seniors, who got screwed out of their final game. But it didn’t look like Dallas cared too much for the game to begin with (as judged by the paltry crowd), and once the weather turned bad, that was a good enough reason to call it a day.

As for the picks, I finished with a final tally of 87-29 — 39-10 on college games, and 48-19 on high school tilts (those seemed so long ago). Jason finished 84-32 — 38-11 on college games, 46-21 on high school games.

We’d like to thank management for the massive pile of coupons for McRibs (no pickles and onions, please) that they gifted us for doing this for a second straight year, as well as the bags of Ol’ Roy for my wiener dogs Kenzie and Bella, and Jason’s beagle Jack, for the one week they helped us with our picks.

If we all survive those acts of kindness, perhaps we’ll try it again next year.
