On Jan. 2, 2019, we had to say “goodbye” to Gregory “Abby” Abernathy: an amazing, funny, kind, unique man.

Abby loved his country and honorably served for two years as a medic in the Army. He worked for UPS for 28 years and was inducted into the UPS Circle of Honor Hall of Fame for 24 years of safe driving. He loved sports and played softball for many years. He played in two world softball tournaments and was inducted into the Inland Empire Softball Hall of Fame. These accomplishments are a result of his passion and talent.

After he stopped playing softball, he started golfing, which quickly became his next sports love. Again, his passion and talent resulted in a hole-in-one in July 2016. He was a big Gonzaga, WSU and EWU fan.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa, of 30 years; his sons Josh Abernathy (Cassi) and Randy Blankenship (Jessica); daughters Jennifer Gibbs (Beau) and Cammy Turner (Steve); sisters Jeanne and Sandy; brother Rick; and even though not brothers by blood, but by love, Ron Bruder and Danny (Judy) Gregory; sister-in-law Sharon Bunce; brother-in-law Doug Bunce; 14 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, big sister Diane and his little sister Kym (or Kimmie as he called her, even after she was grown up).

Abby’s smile and light was one of a kind. He is missed. Please join us in celebrating his laughter and love-filled life from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Eagles in Hayden. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Kootenai Humane Society.
