Stellflug, Hanson, Kiesbuy shine for Lake City

RATHDRUM — Josh Stellflug hit 4 of 5 3-pointers and finished with 16 points as the visiting Lake City Timberwolves beat the Lakeland Hawks 60-55 in nonleague play Saturday at Hawk Court.

Seth Hanson and Jack Kiesbuy each hit a pair of 3-pointers for Lake City (2-9), and finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

“Give Lake City a lot of credit,” Lakeland assistant coach Tyrel Derrick said. “Coach (Jim) Winger did a good job changing defenses. And they executed well, did a good job in transition defense, and that hurt us in our flow.”

Lake City shot 58 percent (19 of 33) from the field, including 9 of 17 from 3-point range.

Ben Zubaly scored a game-high 19 points for Lakeland (4-5), and Noah Haaland grabbed 10 rebounds.

Lakeland plays host to Coeur d’Alene on Tuesday.

Lake City visits Coeur d’Alene on Friday for the Fight for the Fish spirit game.

KALISPELL, Mont. — Colby Gennett scored 20 points and Alex Horning added 17 points for the Trojans in a nonleague loss to the Braves.

“They outrebouded us 39-22 and just controlled the boards,” Post Falls coach Mike McLean said. “They were very physical and athletic. They’re big, strong kids and we couldn’t get any extra possessions or stop them on the offensive boards. We played really hard and competed right with them, but we just couldn’t get enough rebounds or stops to get a win.”

Post Falls (9-5) travels to Ferris on Monday at 5:30 p.m.

SANDPOINT — The Bulldogs missed their first five field goals while the Eagles of Spokane opened the game on an 9-0 run, which set the tone in a nonleague loss at Les Rogers Court.

“We didn’t show up to play,” Sandpoint head coach Wade Engelson said. “I thought we would, but we didn’t. We’re not good enough to go out there without executing our stuff.”

Senior point guard Nick Drynan’s 14 points led West Valley’s balanced scoring effort; only two Eagles scored in double figures, but eight of their 10 players scored points. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs failed to get on the board for the first 4:46 of the contest, and couldn’t find a rhythm with 13 first-half turnovers.

“The nice thing is, when losses like this happen, they make everybody want to get better,” Engelson said. “It’s within our power to do so, and we’re going to get a lot better.”

Alex Stockton led Sandpoint with 10 points and eight rebounds. Senior Bruin Jones added 7 points.

POST FALLS — Jonny Hillman scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half, and Jacob Schultz added 11 of his 13 in the first two quarters, as the Jaguars beat the Badgers in nonleague play at Post Falls Middle School.

Hillman had four assists and three steals, and Schultz had four steals and three assists for Genesis Prep (4-6), which saw one player foul out and two other starters finish with four fouls.

“They (the Badgers) controlled the tempo; it wasn’t the prettiest game,” Genesis Prep coach Marsell Colbert said. “We’ll probably see more games like that than the style we want to play. It’s good to be able to play different styles of basketball.”

Seth Bateman led Bonners Ferry (5-6) with nine points.
