Genesis Prep boys

to host

Australian team at NIC

COEUR d’ALENE — Marist College Canberra of Australia, a private Catholic high school for boys in grades 4-12 despite the college name, will play the Genesis Prep Academy boys basketball team on Friday in what is dubbed an “international friendly” at North Idaho College’s Rolly Williams Court.

The JV1 boys game is scheduled for noon, followed by the JV2 boys at 2 p.m. and the varsity boys game at 4.

The Marist College team is playing a series of games in the Northwest. Genesis Prep athletics operations manager Shella Brearley saw the school was looking for games, and reached out.

Members of the Boys & Girls Club of Kootenai County, with clubs in Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene, will be admitted free to the games (younger kids to the JV games, older kids to the varsity game). Genesis Prep has had a relationship with the Boys & Girls Club for the last five years.

The Marist players are scheduled to stay with the Genesis Prep players on Friday night. The teams will exchange gifts at the game.

Chiefs acquire

Klassen with

Weatherill out

for season

The Spokane Chiefs acquired goaltender Reece Klassen from the Lethbridge Hurricanes in exchange for a seventh round draft pick in the 2020 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, the team announced on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Spokane announced goaltender Dawson Weatherill will miss the remainder of the season due to injury.

“With Dawson Weatherill’s injury, we felt that we needed to pick up another goalie with WHL experience,” Spokane general manager Scott Carter said. “Reece will be a good fit in our dressing room and we are excited to welcome him to our organization. This is a tough situation for Dawson, but at this point, his health is our top priority. We wish him the very best toward a full recovery.”

Spokane also added defenseman Graham Sward to its roster as an Affiliated Player. Sward was the Chiefs’ first-round — 17th overall — pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft. Sward, a 2003-born rearguard from Abbotsford, British Columbia, has played 19 games with the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds of the BCMML this season, scoring five goals with 12 assists for 17 points. He appeared in five preseason games with the Chiefs, picking up one assist.
