Whether it’s a dozen eggs, a 50-pound bag of dog food or a roll of fluorescent duct tape, local shoppers will soon have the luxury of doorstep delivery from Walmart stores in Hayden, Post Falls and Stateline.

Starting March 5, the retail giant will provide the service within a 7-mile radius of each store for a nominal delivery fee, said Joey Smith, manager of the Stateline Walmart.

“For customers who can’t get out — maybe they’re bedridden or sick or for whatever reason — to have their groceries delivered for $9.95 is just priceless,” Smith said. “It’s just another added convenience Walmart is offering its customers. It’s something we’re really excited about.”

Walmart will continue to offer free curbside pickup that allows customers to place their order online and pick it up at the store, where an associate will deliver the merchandise to the vehicle.

To provide the doorstep delivery, Smith said Walmart is contracting with area Uber and Lyft drivers.

Like the curbside pickup, trained personal shoppers will carefully select the produce, meats and other items each customer requests, according to Walmart.

During checkout, customers select a time for their order to be delivered. At the time of checkout, customers will pay the delivery fee. No money is exchanged at the customer’s door.

Delivery partners will be requested by a Walmart grocery associate when the order is ready to be delivered. They will then drive directly to the customer’s location during the 1-hour delivery window they chose.

Unlike other services where a banana costs more online than it costs in the store, Walmart’s prices are the same no matter how you shop, according to a Walmart press release. If the cost of an item changes from the time the order is placed to the time it is packed and ready for delivery, the customer will be charged the lower price.

Customers can use grocery delivery to purchase items outside the grocery aisle. This includes toys, baby merchandise, beauty products, electronics and more.
