POCATELLO — Post Falls High senior Ridge Lovett knew to make things complete, he needed to find the toughest kid in the state.

All he had to do was add some weight.

“We sent two guys to state at 132 (pounds) this year, so had I stayed there, somebody wouldn’t have been here,” Lovett said. “I wanted to wrestle the best, and that’s how you get better is pushing yourself.”

Lovett moved up to 145 pounds to face Centennial’s Ryan Wilson in the state finals, something he knew was coming in November.

“Him and I are good friends,” Lovett said of Wilson. “I had to wrestle up a little, and he’s a big, strong kid and he’s been wrestling tough. He had a game plan to slow the match down, and he did really good with it.”

Lovett closed out his high school career with a 2-1 decision over Wilson in the 145-pound championship, capping his high school career with a 169-0 record.

“I was going down after the first period and knew I could get away,” Lovett said. “I was a little nervous, and that might have played a factor early on. Being undefeated is pretty cool, but I’ve got Fargo coming up this summer. I’m just thinking about the next big thing.”

Lovett, who has signed with Nebraska, is the fourth wrestler in the state of Idaho to complete a perfect career, joining Marsh Valley’s Monte Lish (76-0), Chris Owens (123-0) and Sandpoint’s Jared Lawrence (133-0).

“Ridge has meant everything to this program,” Post Falls coach Pete Reardon said. “He’s put in tons of time over the years into the sport and his accomplishments. He loves his teammates and loves being a part of it. It’s a great accomplishment for him. To be undefeated, it’s amazing.”

Lovett was joined by fellow Post Falls state champions in sophomores Lane Reardon (120 pounds) and Isaac Jessen (126), junior A.J. De La Rosa (138) and senior Wyatt Shelly (170).

Lane Reardon, Pete’s son, won his first title with a pin of Cade Hernandez of Meridian.

“My dad and I have just been working on living in the moment,” Lane Reardon said. “It’s cool, and really hasn’t set in yet. To me, to win it as a team — the right way — that’s more special to me.”

Jessen won his second straight state title, beating Breyden Morrill of Meridian by a 6-2 decision.

“There was a little more pressure on me this year,” Jessen said. “I really just didn’t want to let my team down.”

A.J. De La Rosa won the 138-pound title over Coeur d’Alene’s Nolan Randles.

“Every year, it just feels more special,” De La Rosa said. “I really feel blessed to be part of a team I don’t deserve, but I’ll take it.”

Had Lovett remained at 138 at the outset of the season, De La Rosa realizes he could have had a tough path to a title.

“We set a plan early in the season so there wasn’t a lot of confusion,” De La Rosa said. “Ridge said he was good going to either 132 or 145, and that kind of motivated myself and the team. Ridge could have won a title at any weight, and for him to do that, it was really big.”

Shelly, also a senior, beat Caleb Twait of Meridian in the 170-pound final.

“It’s something I’ve been wanting my entire life,” Shelly said. “I felt like I’d feel like a super hero after winning, but it’s the same feeling. It’s nice to have this, though.”

The team title is Post Falls fourth in the last five years.

“It’s really amazing,” Pete Reardon said. “It’s really amazing to be part of that.”

In what has nearly become a yearly Post Falls High tradition, the wrestling team will have a motorcade starting at 3 p.m. at Kootenai County Fire & Rescue on Seltice Way, heading north on Greensferry Road to the high school, where the school will hold a welcome back ceremony. Organizers encourage participants to put their flashers on if they join the motorcade.

Other Post Falls placers include: senior Tyler Morris (second at 160), sophomore Roddy Romero (second at 98), sophomore Ryan Graves (third at 106), junior Braxton Mason (fourth at 106), sophomore Ethan Miller (fourth at 132), senior Mathias De La Rosa (fifth at 152), senior Jonathon Hill (sixth at 145) and sophomore Isaiah Laguna (sixth at 182).

Coeur d’Alene was second with two champions — senior Payton Keough (132) and freshman Gunner Giulio (152).

Lake City was fourth with one champion — junior Caden Hess (106) — and brought home the school’s first trophy from state wrestling by finishing fourth.

In 4A, Lakeland senior Sam Edelblute won his third state title — this one at 126.

5A: At one point, Keough wondered if this just wasn’t his year.

Out with a high ankle sprain, Keough was out of the lineup from late December to early February.

“At first, I was a worried I’d missed too much of the year,” Keough said. “But I had my coaches’ support to get back into it. It was more therapeutic than anything that I could achieve it, because I wasn’t as sure.”

Keough pinned Blake Beal of Skyview in 3:54, winning the 132-pound championship.

“It was definitely a sense of relief when it was over,” Keough said. “I was really surprised to be ranked No. 1 coming into the tournament, but didn’t have a single point scored against me (at state). It was probably my last wrestling match, so I just wanted to go out and have some fun. When I finally got him on his back, I just wasn’t going to let that kid get up. It was a pretty amazing feeling.”

Keough missed out on state as a freshman after breaking his collarbone late in the season.

“Only being able to wrestle two full seasons, to win a state title as a senior was really nice,” Keough said.

“Payton was just dominant the entire weekend,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “He just dominated his matches. We knew he’d be tough, and he sure was.”

It is Coeur d’Alene’s highest finish at state since back-to-back 5A titles in 2010 and 2011.

Likewise, Gunner Giulio didn’t disappoint in his first showing at state for Coeur d’Alene.

“I was pretty nervous, but it wasn’t anything I couldn’t handle,” said Giulio, who beat Kael Anderson of Highland in the 152-pound final. “It doesn’t feel real right now, but I know in a couple of weeks that I’ll feel pretty proud of myself. I’ve been working for this since I was 4 years old, and it was one of my goals.”

Giulio’s father Jim coached the American Falls wrestling team for 23 years before moving to the Coeur d’Alene area to be closer to family. Gunner’s older brother, V.J., won a national title at North Idaho College in 2014 at the Spokane Convention Center.

“He (V.J.) just told me before the match to do what I do and everything was going to work out,” Gunner Giulio said.

Junior Dom Jessos was second at 113, sophomore Nolan Randles second at 138, senior Nick Dohm fourth at 182, freshman Dylan Moffat fifth at 106 and senior Mitchell Moffat fifth at 160 for Coeur d’Alene, which finished runner-up with 184 points.

“Mitchell tore his MCL in the consolation semis, but gutted out another win,” said Moffat, Mitchell’s uncle. “I’m proud that he was able to finish the way he did. It was a total team effort. We knew the battle was going to be for second place, and knew what it takes to get a trophy. At the start of the year, you always know if you’ve got the talent. Everyone just wrestled great this weekend.”

Hess was in position to qualify for state last year, but suffered a broken arm at a tournament just prior to regionals.

In the state championship match, Hess countered a move by Edward Soto of Skyview, recorded a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining to win 6-3.

“It feels good, knowing all my hard work in the offseason and during the season has paid off,” Hess said.

“Caden is just a stud; he never stops fighting,” Owen said. “He’s had some tough luck, and I’m glad it turned out his way. He earned it.”

All told, Lake City had seven placers — under Owen, the T-Wolves had never had more than three placers in a state tourney.

“It feels really good, all the hours put in, to have it finally pay off,” said Owen, in his 10th season as Lake City coach. “There were many years I wondered if it would happen. Two of my assistants do the middle school coaching. They’re creating the wrestlers by the time they get to us. It’s starting to come together.”

Lake City’s other placers were Owen Hughes (second at 285), Elijah Mills (third at 170), Mahlon Clark (third at 195), Seth Nutting (fourth at 160), Devin Sorrelle (fifth at 120) and Matthew Whitcomb (fifth at 170).

4A: In the finals, Edelblute capped a sterling career at Lakeland by beating Esai Casteneda of Blackfoot by major decision, 15-6.

Edelblute finished with three state titles, after a runner-up finish as a freshman.

“It feels good, kinda crazy to think about,” said Edelblute, who hopes to wrestle in college. “I was pretty nervous beforehand, given it was my last high school match. It was relief (afterward).”

“He’s a kid that’s never complained, just went in there and did the job, just a great role model for all the kids,” said his uncle, Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute.

Casteneda lost in last year’s finals to Will Edelblute, Sam’s brother and Rob’s nephew.

Sam suffered a hyperextended knee at the North Idaho Rumble in late January, and Lakeland coaches were cautious with him prior to regionals.

Rob Edelblute said he happy with all five of his placers — including Ryan Quimby (second at 145), Chandler Axtell (fourth at 126), Colton Boettcher (fourth at 160) and Rhonin Edwards (sixth at 152).

Casey Olesen of Sandpoint placed fifth at 120.

Lakeland finished sixth. Kuna won the team title by 51 points over Columbia.

3A: Timberlake junior Isaiah Evans finished runner-up for the second straight year, losing by major decision to Destin Summers of Snake River in the 126-pound final. Junior Joe Follini was third at 182, junior Ethan Jerome sixth at 132, junior Caleb Miller sixth at 152 and junior Josh Yanez sixth at 170 for Timberlake, which finished tied for 11th with Gooding with 85 points.

Dakota Eixenberger was fourth at 106 and Judson Hall fifth at 132 for Kellogg, which finished 18th.

Sophomore Evan Barajas (113) and senior Gabe See (195) finished runner-up for Bonners Ferry, which finished 10th with 91 points.

Sugar-Salem won its third straight state team title.

2A: St. Maries sophmore Dylan Sotin advanced to the 98-pound championship, finishing runner-up by pin to Declo’s Dax Blackmon of Declo in 3:01.

Ririe won its fifth straight team title with 201 points.
