SCHOOLS: Unfair tax burden

After reading Sunday’s editorial, I have to give a rebuttal to a “recommendation in North Idaho, imported perhaps by newcomers from California, calls for senior citizens to be able to opt out of paying property tax for schools.”

We’ve been here for more than 20 years. We built what we could afford — no granite counters, no hardwood floors, no lake view. But when 26 percent of my tax bill is for schools that I have never nor will ever use, I am angry. I see what District 271 does with its money and it does not put out top notch students for the money it gets. Looking at the state budget, the largest share goes to schools, so where is the problem?

My income has stopped and what I have has to go from month to month, regardless of how much the utilities, medical expenses, food, gas, TAXES, go up.

I have contacted all but six states in the Union. Only seven states thus far offer NO HELP TO SENIORS for school taxes, Idaho being one of them. I will fight until I die to get this burden off senior citizens backs. This is a burden that those of us WHO ARE ON FIXED INCOMES should not have to bear. There is no return for us…
