WATER POLO
Both the Coeur d’Alene/KROC Water Polo Club varsity boys and girls teams succeeded in defending their state high school water polo championships in Boise on Saturday.
Due to growth of water polo in Idaho, the tournament has been expanded to include both boys varsity and girls varsity divisions. The boys team beat Boise by a final score of 12-5 and the girls team beat Magic Valley 17-10. The Coeur d’Alene team has won the Idaho state championship the last six years in a row. Each team played a total of 3 games in the tournament.
In the Idaho varsity boys division, the Cd’A/KROC boys squad outscored Bishop Kelly on Friday 12-4. The Cd’A team spread the scoring evenly, with goals from Caiden Hartfield, Caleb Simmons, Daniel Simmons, Caleb Markowski, Jack Lyon and several others. Josh Simmons supported the defense with a great effort in the goal, only allowing 4 goals total. On Saturday morning, the Cd’A club played a strong match with the Magic Valley team, pulling ahead of the Ocelots 10-0 early in the first half and then holding on to a final score of 16-2. Caiden Hartfield lead all scorers with 4 goals, followed by Caleb Simmons with 3. Several players on the Cd’A team scored two goals, including Owen Bartosh, Caleb Markowski and Ethan Halsted. Max Isaacson and Spencer Provence also scored goals in the game.
In the championship game, Cd’A fought Boise through a very close game in the first half and pulled away as the second half continued. Boise scored the first goal of the game after a rebound off of a shot, bounced back to an Boise player who fired the ball back in before the Cd’A goalie could get back to block it. Cd’A then scored a couple of goals to go ahead in the first quarter. The teams then traded a number of goals with Cd’A pulling ahead throughout the quarter. The Coeur d’Alene club continued to score goals in the second half, eventually winning the game 12-5.
In the Idaho varsity girls division, the Cd’A/KROC club played games against Bishop Kelly, Magic Valley and Boise. On Friday evening the girls played Bishop Kelly in the first round game. The game was very close with both teams scoring goals through the first three quarters after which Coeur d’Alene led 10-8. The Cd’A offense came alive in the fourth quarter, scoring 5 goals in the final period for a final of 15-10. Hannah Dansereau put together an outstanding effort, scoring the first 6 goals for Cd’A and 8 goals total in the game. Emma Park put in 3 goals with several other players also scoring.
In their second game, the Coeur d’Alene girls played Boise and won in a very convincing effort. The women outplayed Boise from the start, scoring 5 goals in the first period while maintaining a shut-out in the period for Boise. Goalie Morgan McBride blocked all attempts at goal in the period and continued to keep scoring by Boise to a minimum throughout the game. Hannah Dansereau continued her scoring run with 5 goals in the game, including several shots from half-court. Emma Park contributed 4 goals through a number of drives and outside shots. Additional goals were scored by Emma Ramage, Ryenne Ayers and several other players.
In the championship game, Cd’A played Magic Valley by steadily scoring throughout the game. The Coeur d’Alene team scored the first 3 goals on its way to a 9-4 halftime lead. They then continued to outscore Magic Valley and won by a final of 17-10. A number of players contributed goals, including Hanna Dansereau (7), Emma Park (4), Ashley Schneider (3) and Emma Ramage (1). Morgan McBride had a number of important saves throughout the game to keep the score from getting close.
Hanna Dansereau led all players in the tournament with an impressive 20 goals during the tournament. Daniel Simmons led all boys with a total of 13 goals in the tournament, closely followed by Caiden Hartfield with 11. Coaches Mark Collingham, Peter Neirinckx and Katelyn Smith were impressed with both team’s performances. Coach Collingham noted that the team had quite a number of junior and freshman players on the team who should be back on the team next season. Seniors Josh Simmons Andrew Hanger and Jack Lyon played a leading role throughout the games along with first-year senior Tyler Loutzenhiser. Collingham noted, “Our first-year players made huge improvements this season, by next year they will be be important contributors. The club practices year-round at the KROC Aquatic center and is open to all high school students in the surrounding area.
