Vandals’ football signing day

event set for Wednesday in Cd’A

COEUR d’ALENE — Idaho football will celebrate its 2019 recruiting class on National Signing Day on Wednesday with an event featuring head coach Paul Petrino and members of his staff at The Coeur d’Alene Resort.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. with the program beginning at 6:30. The cost is $20 and includes heavy appetizers and a no-host bar.

For those who cannot attend, the event will be video streamed on GoVandals.com and PlutoTV.

The Vandals inked 13 newcomers during the December early signing period. At the end of the first signing period, Idaho’s class was ranked No. 1 in the Big Sky and No. 2 in the FCS by 247 Sports.

Zags’ Hachimura named WCC Player of the Week

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — For the third time this season, Gonzaga’s Rui Hachimura was named the West Coast Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

Hachimura scored 52 points in a pair of wins for the No. 4 Zags (21-2, 8-0 WCC). After scoring 20 points in a 93-63 victory at BYU, he nearly scored a new career high with 32 points versus San Diego. The junior was 19 of 28 from the field (67.9 percent) for the week, going 11 of 15 against USD. He grabbed nine rebounds at BYU and seven against San Diego. The Toyama, Japan, native blocked three shots and made two steals during the wins also.

Hachimura is third in the conference averaging 20.4 points per game. He is sixth in the league shooting 60.6 percent from the field and eighth grabbing 6.3 rebounds per game.

n Also Monday, Hachimura was named to the John R. Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 list, announced by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. The award is presented to the nation’s most outstanding basketball player.

Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts, the late season list is comprised of 20 student-athletes who are front-runners for the sport’s most prestigious honor, based on their performances during the first half of the 2018-19 season.

Bob Cousy Award late season list

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Gonzaga’s Josh Perkins was named one of the 10 players on the late season list for the 2019 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced Monday.

Perkins is sixth in the country with 154 assists so far this season. He is averaging 6.7 assists per game, which ranks ninth in the country. The redshirt senior leads the West Coast Conference in both of those categories, along with assist-to-turnover ratio (3.50). His 632 career assists are the third-most amongest active players in the country. Perkins boasts a 122-17 record in games he has played in as a Zag, including a 29-1 record in conference road games. He is eight assists from 640 in his career, which would move him to second on the program’s all-time list.

Others currently on the late season list (which is subject to change as the season continues): Tremont Waters, LSU; Markus Howard, Marquette; Cassius Winston, Michigan State; Ja Morant, Murray State; Cody Martin, Nevada; Carsen Edwards, Purdue; Jordan Bone, Tennessee; Ty Jerome, Virginia; and Justin Robinson, Virginia Tech.
