COEUR d’ALENE — A new weekly podcast is welcoming community members to hear what's cooking in the Coeur d'Alene School District.

"The Sup is On," hosted by Superintendent Steve Cook, launched Dec. 13 with a discussion about school start times with the district's technology director Seth Deniston, who is also overseeing the district's school start times committee meetings.

On Dec. 20, Cook chatted about curriculum policy with curriculum director Katie Graupman and most recently he visited with assistant superintendent of secondary education and curriculum Trina Caudle about the Portrait of a Graduate project, which focuses on six key areas where students need to be prepared before they finish high school.

Cook said he and communications director Scott Maben came up with the idea for a podcast a few months ago while examining the volume of communication that occurs within and throughout the district.

"I'm a rabid podcast listener," said Cook, whose office serves as the recording studio. "We're getting ready to do a three-part series on boundary work."

Cook said he already has a list of more than 50 items that could be the center of future podcast conversations, but community feedback and suggestions are welcome any time.

It's a question-and-answer interview format, where Cook’s guests are “the talent and I'm the host," he said Monday.

“Eventually I want to speak with some teachers and students and community members," he said. "Anybody who feels like they need to talk about something."

Maben said he thinks the medium will help amplify the communications the district is already doing as well as bring more people into the conversation.

"When we're talking about teachers and parents and school volunteers, or the students especially, I'm excited about it," he said. "It's just going to open up that world of education in our community and let even more people in to see it.”

The roughly 20-minute podcasts go live at noon on Fridays.
