RJ Reuber: Coffee, culture and creativity
Meet RJ Reuber, a young, determined business owner who enjoys arts and entertainment and is quite fond of coffee.
Generation: That’s tough. Probably a millennial, but I don’t like avocados, so, I don’t know.
Career and community involvement: I am the owner of Calypsos Coffee in downtown Coeur d'Alene. I also edit, publish and distribute a small art and writing publication based almost entirely on artist submissions.
1. Why and when did you decide to become a co-owner of Calypsos Coffee and Creamery at the age of 21?
I spent the past few years working three to four jobs at the same time, and saved up quite a bit. (I still have my job at the Long Ear). I wanted a job where I could drink ungodly amounts of coffee and have it be work-related, and play whatever music I wanted in the office. Roasting coffee is also always something I wanted to do. I saw Calypsos up for sale last year, and decided to go for it.
2. What are some of your favorite events Calypsos hosts?
I love everything we do, from our open mics to our karaoke benefit nights. We host a lot of live punk/metal/alternative music shows after dark. Those are my favorite, because you get to see amazing bands, and they usually have cool T-shirts. The best live band I’ve ever seen played Calypsos, it was mind-blowing. It was a band was called BoscoMujo, for those who are wondering. Musicians of all genres (even country, I love country) are welcome to play here. I love hearing what’s out there. Otherwise, we recently hosted a birthday party for local historical folk hero Dutch Jake. Google him, he’s awesome.
3. Why is a coffee house an ideal venue for socializing and enjoying the arts?
Coffee keeps you awake and alert, and our awesome loose-leaf teas can help you chill out. Whatever your ideal creating mood is, we can help. The tables are open for drawing, writing, editing pictures, whatever. You can bring your friends and collaborate on stuff. It’s perfect!
4. What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?
I only have one working kidney. I’m also a card-carrying reverend. I think I’m the only person in town who can officiate your wedding with half the kidney capacity.
5. What are a few things you love about doing business in North Idaho?
Doing business in North Idaho is really cool. There’s tons of networking groups and resources. The ITEX bartering system is super strong in this area, and I’ve met so many amazing business owners through that. Everyone here is super friendly and supportive, especially downtown. The coffee community in this area has been super helpful in sharing knowledge and pro tips. We have many outstanding roasters in this area, and it’s really encouraged me to up our coffee game at Calypsos.
