Free music in the park on Labor Day

| August 30, 2019 1:00 AM

Maestro Jan Pellant will lead the Coeur d’Alene Symphony Orchestra in the 18th Free Labor Day Concert at 1 p.m. Monday in the Rotary Band Shell at Coeur d’Alene City Park.

This year’s concert features selections from George Frideric Handel’s “Water Music,” Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia,” Antonín Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dances” and Aaron Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” along with the Symphony’s tradition of patriotic songs and medleys.

Mezzo-soprano Heather Parker and baritone Brandon Michael will sing with the Symphony during arias from Giacomo Puccini and Gioachino Rossini along with favorite Broadway duets.

An added attraction for this year's concert is Juan Esteban Martinez. Martinez, a Yale University student, was the winner of the Symphony’s National Young Artists competition in the instrumental class last season. He was unable to come to Coeur d’Alene earlier because of illness. This Labor Day, he will perform the Louis Spohr “Clarinet Concerto (1st movement)” with the Symphony.

The audience is encouraged to bring chairs, blankets, food, hats and friends to this free event.
