DAR seeks entries for annual essay contest

The Lt. George Farragut Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invites students in 5-12 grade to participate in one of its annual essay contests.

Both contests are open to students in public, private or parochial schools as well as to homeschoolers. Students are encouraged to put on their thinking caps and exercise their creativity and writing skills as they consider the topics for this year’s essay contest. Teachers are encouraged to integrate the contests into their lesson plans.

The American History Essay Contest is open to students in 5-8 grade. The topic is “The Voyage of the Mayflower.” Students are to imagine they are a passenger on the Mayflower. Knowing what materials were available in 1620, what would you have packed to prepare for the trip and a new life in the wilderness? After experiencing more than two months at sea, then landing at Plymouth Colony on Nov. 9, 1620, do you think you would have made different choices? Why?

The Christopher Columbus Essay Contest is open to high school students. The topic is “A Sailor’s Experiences as Part of Christopher Columbus’s First Expedition to the Americas.” Students are to imagine being a sailor who accompanied Christopher Columbus on his first voyage and now returned to Spain. Describe your impression of Christopher Columbus and perception of the purpose of the expedition. Talk about your experiences on the voyage, detailing the places and people you encountered, and what you what you see as the significance of the discoveries made. 

Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness. Certificates will be issued to all who participate. A monetary award is given to the chapter winners from each grade in the American History contest. A monetary award is given to the chapter winner for the Christopher Columbus contest. First-place winners advance to the state competition.
