Darren Arthur Smalley, 54
Darren Arthur Smalley, 54, of Rathdrum, Idaho, and known to friends as “Dagwood,” passed away on Friday, Aug. 23, 2019, in the presence of his mother, family members and friends. Darren was born Aug. 27, 1965, in Coeur d’Alene, to Gerald and Ellen (Smalley) Bernier.
Darren, with his family, moved to Southern California at the age of 5. He grew up in the San Fernando Valley, with the majority of that time spent in Sylmar, Calif., where he attended Sylmar High School and Los Angeles Valley Occupational Center. Darren worked various jobs in construction and also at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, Calif. Darren moved back to the Pacific Northwest as an adult and resided in St. Maries and Post Falls, before eventually settling in the Rathdrum area for the past 17 years.
Darren held a passion for classic cars, 4-wheeling, motorcycles, fishing, hunting, Budweiser, indica, and the Green Bay Packers. He found solace while fishing at Lake Elsie, in the mountains above Silverton, and pontoon boating at the numerous lakes in Northern Idaho.
Darren is survived by his loving and devoted mother, Ellen Bernier of Hayden; his father, Gerald Bernier of Hayden; his brother, Brian (Latisha) Bernier; nephews, Baron and Beau; niece, Lorelei of Gilbert, Ariz.; his aunts, Nancy Moore of Emida, Idaho, Darlene and Earl Gleason of St. Maries, Mary Lou and Irving Bailey of Post Falls and Uncle Arthur and Vicky Bernier of Post Falls; his 31 cousins and countless nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, 2019, at Yates Funeral Home and Gathering Center, 373 E. Hayden Ave., Hayden, Idaho.
