Charlotte (Womack) Akin Cooper, 84
Charlotte (Womack) Akin Cooper, 84, of Hayden, Idaho, and Yuma, Ariz., passed away from breast cancer on Aug. 19, 2019, and was surrounded by family in her last days. She was born on Jan. 27, 1935, in Houston, Texas, to William Charles and Helen Claire (Williams) Womack.
She attended Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, in Nacogdoches, Texas, and in 1956, she obtained her B.A. in education. She taught school full-time until her third child was born, then substituted occasionally until she landed her favorite job, which was working with high school students in Anchorage, helping them to get scholarships and plan their college educations.
Charlotte married a naval officer, Edward Stone, in 1954, and they had two boys, Dennis and John. In 1964, Charlotte married Samuel Akin and they had a daughter, Elizabeth. They were stationed to Elmendorf Air Force Base, in Anchorage, Alaska, where they spent more than 30 years.
In 1989 they moved to Coeur d’Alene. Sam passed away in 1996. While attending the Methodist church, she met Terry Cooper and they were married in May of 2000. They lived in Hayden in the summer and Yuma in the winter.
Charlotte was involved in The United Methodist Church choir, handbell choir, Friendship Circle and she was also a part of The Red Hat Society. She volunteered at the Coeur d’Alene Visitors Bureau and the Yuma Territorial Prison, where she gave tours and told the history of both towns to tourists.
Charlotte is survived by her husband, Terry Cooper; daughter, Liz Akin Wolff; sons, Dennis Stone, John Akin and Paul and Sean Cooper; grandchildren, Andrew Yost, Samantha Yost, Josh Stone, Zach Stone, Sarah Akin and Kandra Cooper and great-grandchildren, Laila Yost and William Stone.
There will be a funeral in Tenaha, Texas, where she will be laid to rest with her parents. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 911 W.
