PRESS: Beware AP Trump bias

| August 23, 2019 1:00 AM

Is The Press obligated to run AP articles? Does anyone at The Press read them first? The article recently about green cards for immigrants is just the latest in agenda-driven “news” from that source.

It would qualify as a perfect high school journalism class example of slanted reporting. Words like “aggressive,” “denying,” “raids,” “target people” are used as inflammatory rhetoric and belong on an opinion page.

The article’s crowning jewel reads “Trump is trying to move the U.S. toward a system that focuses on immigrants’ skills INSTEAD OF EMPHASIZING THE REUNIFICATION OF FAMILIES.” Doesn’t anyone recognize the problem with this statement? It is the writer revealing his/her bias about the issue and meant to influence the reader’s feelings. That is not professional journalism. Unfortunately, the AP regularly spits out these partisan news briefs.

The article’s perspective is undeniably biased. News is not meant to persuade, and I shouldn’t be able to discern the opinion of a news article’s author regarding its subject. Subtle as it can be, too many journalists today don’t seem to recognize this fact, or they just don’t care.
