Light Up Riverstone will benefit humane society
The Kootenai Humane Society is charging forward with its mission to build a new shelter for four-legged residents.
As of Friday, the $6.5 million capital campaign was 62% to completion, Development Director Vicky Nelson said.
"We have to be at 90% of funds collected and/or pledged before we can break ground," she said. "It could happen tomorrow, it could happen next week. We're hoping to be there by the end of the year."
The funds will go toward a 24,000-square-foot adequately equipped building on a 10-acre parcel west of the Coeur d'Alene Airport on Atlas Road in Hayden. It will be able to accommodate the thousands of animals the Humane Society serves when in need of medical care, rescue or temporary housing as they wait to find forever homes.
From 6 to 10 p.m. Sept. 20 and 21, the Riverstone community will contribute to the humane society's capital campaign with the Light Up Riverstone anniversary celebration.
Light Up Riverstone will feature fire and light shows, live music, bounce houses, food samples, contests and a street fair as the neighborhood enters its second decade and seeks to give back to a cause that is close to many hearts. All proceeds will go to the Kootenai Humane Society, a nonprofit that does not receive government support.
"They're a no-kill shelter, so I believe in that. Personally, I believe it's important," said Nikole Cummings, office manager and executive assistant at Riverstone CDA.
"It takes a lot of money for them to do it the right way and we want to support them every way we can," she said. "We're just big supporters of everything with four legs."
Admission to Light Up Riverstone will be $10 per adult and free for kids 12 and younger.
