WHITEHEAD: Bankruptcy story a 'smear'

| August 16, 2019 1:00 AM

On Sunday, July 21, The Press put an expose above the fold on the front page of a 14-year-old personal bankruptcy by Rick Whitehead. That most-read position of the week emphasized the topic being covered. If it is an attack, it is a powerful one. I believe it was placed with that intent.

This coverage followed an earlier letter by Scott Jones dropping from the Sheriff’s race and putting his support to Bob Norris. Most of the coverage was piling on by other candidates. Bob Norris’ comments were especially critical.

As this played out in your paper, I saw it as an unwarranted smear on a good man. Using a 14-year-old personal problem that Rick handled without affecting his professional performance is dirty politics.

I met Rick, have talked with him and believe he is just exactly what Kootenai County needs to successfully manage our Sheriff’s department as our community meets the challenges of rapid growth and change.

Rick’s extensive experience is a good fit for Kootenai County. His resume is one of unquestioned professional leadership experience in growth and meeting change.

Kootenai County has outgrown the capabilities of a Sheriff with one year’s experience repeated 20 or more years.

The future dictates that our next Sheriff has proven good leadership skills and a history of learning, adapting and successful growth in leading law enforcement.

Rick Whitehead is that man.
