Richard Hirst, 84
Richard ‘Dick’ Hirst passed away Sunday, Aug. 4, 2019. He was born in Spokane, Wash., on Aug. 8, 1934, to Donald and Evelyn (Phinney) Hirst. He was raised in Cocolalla, Idaho.
In 1954 he married Ruth Leen, in Sandpoint, Idaho. They made their first home in Burley, Idaho. This is where he began his career with the Idaho Transportation Department, from which he retired in 1990. They briefly lived in Blackfoot, Idaho, then the Shoshone area, before landing permanately in Coeur d’Alene, in 1967. Here he raised his family and made lifelong friends. After he retired, he and his wife spent their winter months in Yuma, Ariz.
He was a father of four — three sons: Gary Richard Hirst, from Cheney, Wash.; Randy James Hirst, from Rathdrum, Idaho and Donald Gene Hirst, deceased; and daughter, Lisa Ann (Hirst) Nixon, from Clarkston, Wash. He was preceeded in death by his mother and father; older brother, Donald (Sonny) Hirst; and his son, Donald Hirst. Left behind is his wife, Ruth Hirst; his remaining sons, Gary, with his wife, Sherri, and Randy, with his wife, Debbie; daughter, Lisa; as well as 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and even a few great-great-grandchildren.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, in-laws and friends. He was active with his sons through their Scouting years, and in 13 years he never missed a Campfire Girls father/daughter event. He loved the outdoors. Hunting, camping and fishing were among his many hobbies, as was bowling, golfing and shooting pool.
He was a man of many talents, like tooling leather and various types of wood crafts, but he was a natural at oil painting. He was an honest, caring, fair person, who believed in doing what was right. A wonderful husband, father and friend. A good man that will be deeply missed.
Memorial service to be held from 1-3 p.m. on Aug. 25, 2019, at the Hayden Eagles.
