Hatley fifth at Washington Amateur after second round

Reid Hatley shot 1-under-par-69 in the second round of the 93rd Washington State Men’s Amateur Championship at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman on Wednesday.

Hatley, in fifth after two rounds, is at 67-69—136. John Sand of Hoquiam shot 4-under-par 66 to take the lead (67-66—133). Sand will be a junior at the University of Denver in the fall and was a four-time 1A league Most Valuable Player while playing at Hoquiam, winning the 2016 WSGA Champion of Champions.

Hatley will tee off in today’s round at 10:48 a.m., with the first round leader Eric Hagen of Olympia and Padraic Sim of Seattle. Hagen is tied for second (65-70—135) and Sim is sixth (67-70—137).

The tournament concludes today.

- North Idaho College men’s and women’s golf coach Russell Grove finished 8-under-par with a 74-67-67—208 in the Phoenix Open at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club in Gold Canyon.

Grove finished tied for 15th overall in the tournament, which featured 156 golfers from the southwest and former PGA Tour winners. Temperatures were 115 degrees for Wednesday’s final round.

Charlie Beljan of Mesa, Ariz., won the tournament 69-66-65—200.
