Anglin' with Anglen - 1973

August 2, 1973

It is just so hot and dry it just scares a person to be in the woods now. I fought one real bad prairie fire in Wyoming, several forest fires here and we burnt out in 1945 while I was in the service and I am just plain afraid of fire.

Have been under the weather some this past week, so Monday I hooked on to the boat and headed for Sinclair Lake. I dropped a double anchor, got my cushion so I could rest easy and just put in a nice quiet day.

I found out a 2 pound line wasn’t heavy enough for that lake that particular day, I broke off five of the first six fish I hooked, went to a four pound line and did manage to land seven nice trout; didn’t want to be bothered too much anyway.

Had a date with my oldest grandson to go bass fishing on Brush lake the next day, rolled him out at four in the morning and headed for the lake. Man it was cold up there — north wind blowing and so much mist you couldn’t hardly see the lake.

Bass were biting good. We fished about two hours and had twenty one, three quarters of a pound to a pound and a half. We used nightcrawlers mostly but did get a few on both plastic worms and plugs.

We anchored to eat our lunch and I caught my limit of trout while my grandson bass fished. He found a few stumps and roots that put up a pretty good fight and enjoyed himself. He has fished with me before and thinks bass fishing is alright.

We were on Robinson Friday early and we just might as well have stayed home; did manage to catch enough to eat but we really worked for them. Quite a few boats up there and nobody was catching fish when I left.

I guess a guy should pay more attention to the fish calendar, moon or weather, but that would waste a lot of time, and I would miss a lot of fishing.

While we were at Brush lake we caught four big snails for the fish tank and I see it is full of little ones already; will have to catch a couple more sunfish and they will clean them out.

Oh yes, I went out to McArthur Wednesday for a few minutes, the dock was full so I went over to Dodge creek; it is almost dry. Went down to the mouth and caught thirty perch in just about that many minutes. They were eight to nine inches long, small by McArthurs standards.

As I was going to the lake I saw over fifty geese and got withing thirty yards of them before they flew. I hope I never get so blase that I can’t get a thrill out of just watching the wildlife we have here. We saw nine whitetail deer Friday morning going to Robinson.
