GOLF

BLANCHARD — Battling strong winds and a nine-team field, the Coeur d’Alene boys had three scores in the 70s to win the Sandpoint Invitational on Monday at StoneRidge Golf Course in Blanchard.

Cole Jaworski (74), Jackson Davenport (77) and Brayden Ogle (78) led the way for the Vikings varsity. And although he was competing as an individual, CHS freshman Trace Goucher fired an 80 for his best score of the season.

“Considering the conditions, I was pretty pleased with our scores,” Vikings coach Bryan Duncan said. “Some of the greens (at StoneRidge) are in rough shape after the winter we had, so everybody had to adjust their putting.”

Lake City’s Cameron Johnson continued his strong play, shooting a 1-over-par 72 to earn medalist honors.

“The kids battled some tough conditions today. Cameron Johnson has been playing really good golf lately and he continued that today with a 72 which was the lowest round for the boys,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Both the boys and the girls need to have a good week of practice if we are going to compete for the district title Monday.”

Post Falls’ boys (322) edged Lake City (323) by a stroke to claim second, led by Jacob Glenn’s 76.

In girls’ play, Lewiston topped Lake City for the girls team title, with Moscow’s Makena Rauch shooting a 75 to finish far ahead of the other girls golfers.

Coeur d’Alene took third and their coach was pleased to see continued improvement from the Vikings.

“The girls have knocked 50 strokes off their team score from the start of the season,” Duncan said. “They’re now in the hunt to qualify for state.”

The 5A regional tournament for North Idaho is Monday, May 6, at Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course.

Before that, area teams will compete on Friday — the boys squads in a 26-team event at The Links, and the girls teams in a tournament at Twin Lakes Village.

BASEBALL

Timberlake 4-4, Sandpoint 1-10

SPIRIT LAKE — A dominant pitching performance by Jack McDonald coupled with two clutch at-bats helped the host Tigers earn a nonconference win in Monday’s opener. Sandpoint used nine hits and took advantage of five Timberlake errors to claim the nightcap.

McDonald earned the complete game victory in game one, allowing only one run, three hits and one walk while striking out 14 Bulldogs.

“Jack was really dealing today,” Tigers coach Cameron Knigge said.

Timberlake took control of the game in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, sophomore Jacob Hessing laid down a “perfect” suicide squeeze bunt to score the first run of the game, Knigge said. The next hitter, fellow sophomore Alex Drake, belted a two-run single to put the hosts ahead, 3-0.

“We had two really big, back-to-back at-bats by our two sophomores,” Knigge added.

In game two, Sandpoint’s Tyler Lehman threw five shutout innings, allowing only three hits while striking out nine. Billy Brackett went 3-for-4 at the plate for the Bulldogs, knocking in three runs.

Timberlake (12-7-1 overall, 10-0 Intermountain League) visits IML foe Priest River for a doubleheader today.
