John B. Meyer, M.D., 88

John B. Meyer, M.D., 88, of Dalton Gardens, Idaho, passed away April 24, 2019, at the Schneidmiller Hospice House on Prairie Ave. in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He was born June 30, 1930, in Williamsport, Pa.; the son of Carl A. and Margaret Steinbacher Meyer. His mother died when he was 19 and he developed a close, life-long relationship with his aunt, Hilda M. Meyer (“G.A.H.” or Great Aunt Hilda, as his children knew her).

He graduated from Fordham University in New York City, then obtained his medical degree at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. He practiced anesthesia at Providence Hospital (a Catholic Charity Hospital) in Washington D.C. until the late 1960s when he moved to Coeur d’Alene. His anesthesia practice continued at Kootenai Medical Center and Coeur d’Alene Eye Clinic until his retirement at age 75.

He and his wife, Barbara, raised and showed Samoyed and Siberian Husky show dogs. They traveled to dog shows for many years and brought home a great number of champions. His hobby was anything electronic, starting with stereo components in college and satellite installations in recent years. When he discovered computers there was nothing about them he didn’t understand and love — from building and repairing to upgrading.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara A. Meyer; brothers, Carl Meyer and Bernard Meyer of Williamsport; sister, Mary Lewis of Wilmington, Del.; son, John B. Meyer, Jr. of Leesburg, Va., and daughter, Catherine L. Meyer of Dalton Gardens, Idaho. He is survived by his brother, Joseph Meyer of Leola, Pa.; his children, James Meyer, Margaret (Joe) Kronk of Dublin, Calif., Helen Fausett (Lowell) of Corvallis, Ore., Mark Meyer of Seattle, Wash.; stepson, John Moede of Arizona; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Kootenai County Humane Society, PO Box 1005, Hayden, ID, 83835 or Hospice of North Idaho, 2290 W. Prairie Ave., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815.

A gathering to remember Dr. Meyer will be held on Monday, May 13, 2019, from 4-6 p.m. at Yates Funeral Home — Hayden Gathering Center, 373 E. Hayden, Ave. Hayden, ID 83835.
